Exclusive U.S. Timepiece from BaselWorld 2010: Franc Vila’s Cobra “Blue Bandido”
Exclusive Spanish watchmaker Franc Vila has been a fresh and exciting addition in the world of boutique haute horology as his Franc Vila EVOS Cobra watches amazed BaselWorld 2010 and continued to build on his legacy for exquisite and eccentric timepieces. The most interesting new timepiece was Franc Vila’s Cobra “Blue Bandido,” an exclusive timepiece for the United States.
Franc Vila watches are unmistakable due to their very unique design and shape. The case on these watches is a combination of what Vila calls “DieHard Extreme Steel” and carbon-fiber, with titanium accents. The watch is water resistant 300 meters and houses an automatic mechanical hand finished Caliber FV8Ch movement with Franc Vila’s unique “Gold Concept Rotor”. Dial is also a combination of carbon fiber and guilloché (decorated) metal, with chronograph and “Big date” indicators. Comes on a black rubber strap with steel deployant buckle and as a nice bonus a crocodile leather strap with matching stitchings is also included. Price will be about $20,000. All are limited to just 88 pieces.

Luxury Sport Watch of the Year: IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph
The winner of King Jeweler’s Luxury Sport Watch of the Year as released at the SIHH 2010 show hosted in Geneva during late January, IWC triumphs with release of the Yacht Club collection back in the iconic Portuguese case. The 45.4mm Yacht Club Chronograph is the first sporty IWC model in the Portuguese family and houses IWC’s manufacture caliber 89360. Its chronograph permits the recording of aggregate times of up to twelve hours on the common counter for the minutes and hours and can be reset to zero via the flyback function at any time while running, so that it is instantly ready to start measuring a new time.
Built for sea duty, a screw-in crown and crown protection help protect against the elements, and the case offers 6 bar water resistance. Consistent with the sporty theme, this watch has luminescent indices and hands – a first in the Portuguese family.
The Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph is available in three variants: 1) steel with a silver-plated dial, rhodium-plated luminescent hands and appliqués; 2) steel with a black dial, silver-plated flange and rhodium-plated hands and appliqués, also luminescent; 3) 18 carat red gold with a slate-colored dial with a sun pattern ground finish, subtly contrasted by the black small seconds display circle and the black ring for the aggregate minutes of the chronograph. This model is distinguished additionally by gold-plated hands and solid red gold appliqués. All three variants are worn on a black rubber strap with a folding clasp. The sapphire-glass back offers a clear view of the IWC-manufactured movement with double-pawl winding.

King Jewelers : What does the watch industry look like to you by the year 2100?
Jean Claude Biver : The watch will have disappeared as a time piece and it will be replaced as a piece of Art, a symbol of tradition and culture. It will be the reign of the “Haute Horlogerie”, the reign of fine Swiss watch making Art.
KJ : If you could be any animal which one would you be?
JCB : I would choose the cow. Because the cow is pacific, has a great curiosity and a strong memory. In addition to all of that, it gives us milk and food.
KJ : What musician or band could create the best soundtrack for the Hublot Brand?
JCB : Carlos Santana and/or Miles Davies. Because both have created new sounds with traditional instruments. In that sense they are close to what Hublot has done with traditional watch making.
KJ : What visual artist would you want to create dials for Hublot?
JCB : Joan Miro, because he was a master of emotion, and colors. Color would be one of my favorite features in a watch or dial.
KJ : What do you say to Hublot haters and how do you approach a fan?
JCB : Hublot cannot be loved at first sight, as we are the fusion of tradition and the future. Therefore I would recommend people to buy first a few traditional watches till they get the right feeling about it. Once they have achieved this, they will understand the richness and beauty of fusing tradition with vision. But if you don’t understand tradition, it is impossible to you to understand fusion.
KJ : If you were the leader of the world for only 1 hour, what would be the first thing you would do?
JCB : I would share! Share the richness, share the resources, share the space, share the planet and share love!
