Spring Cleaning: Giving New Life to Old Jewelry

Now that the weather is slowly getting warmer, it’s time for everyone to throw open the windows and air out their winter nests. There’s something about the spring air makes us want to clean out all of the unnecessary clutter that’s been accumulating during the winter months and start out fresh. But when was the last time you went through your jewelry box?
It happens to all of us sooner or later. We buy pieces that are in fashion one season, and out the next. Friends have given us necklaces and bracelets that we wore daily when we were younger. Beloved relatives have left us antique rings. Over time, this leads to your jewelry box becoming a cluttered and tangled mess of unpolished chains, solitary earrings, and rings with missing gemstones. But never fear, there’s a host of solutions when it comes to dealing with unworn jewelry.

1. Give It Away

Donate those old jewelry items to Goodwill. Some lucky bargain hunter will use them to complete the outfit of her dreams. Do you have a friend who has admired any of your old jewelry? Why not give it to them? Not only will it make you happy to see your old jewelry getting new use, but it will remind your friend of you every time they wear it. Young nieces and nephews also adore playing dress-up with old jewelry and you don’t have to worry about it being damaged.

2. Sell It

At this economic stage of our history, selling jewelry for the gold or gemstones has become increasingly common. Now more than ever, people are receiving top dollar for the raw materials that their jewelry provides. Gold and diamonds are especially doing well in the market due to their steadily rising cost. If you are looking for a little extra cash to finish a home project or put a little more gas in your tank, this is the option for you. The same can be said for vintage and antique pieces. Depending on the jewelry piece, we recommend getting an appraisal for the item before selling to ensure that you receive its total worth.

3. Re-purpose It

Some of the jewelry we hold onto has such sentimental value that we can’t bear to part with it. If this is the case, what modifications would you need to make in order for you to wear it? Sometimes, this may be as simple as resizing a ring, repairing a broken chain, or replacing a missing gemstone. Other times, it may mean that the item in question, such as a ring, wasn’t set very well the first time and it just needs a few modifications in order to look like one coherent piece.
However, it is possible to make something completely new combining your old jewelry items. You can combine the gemstones from several pieces and have them re-made into a new piece, something fresh that you’ll want to wear but will still retain the sentimental reminder of who it once belonged to. This method would also be a cheaper way to have a new customized piece as you would be providing the raw gemstone materials.
Re-purposing the metals from old jewelry can be done, but it is a more complicated process. In order to re-use the metal for a new jewelry design, the metal would have to be sent to a refinery in order to remove any impurities that might have been created as a result of creating the original jewelry piece. Creating jewelry with impure metals can lead to porosity, tiny pores in the metal that can jeopardize the structural integrity of the jewelry.

Baselworld: TAG Heuer's Mikrotimer Flying 1000 Challenges Chronograph Design

Baselworld is starting off with a bang. Yesterday, TAG Heuer revealed that the results of their top secret “Project Apollo” was the production of the Mikrotimer Flying 1000, the only mechanical chronograph to measure and display the 1/1,000th of a second. The heart of this Mikrotimer vibrates at an astounding 3,600,000 beats per hour. That means that the Mikrotimer Flying 1000 is approximately 125 times more accurate than the standard chronograph and is more than 10 times faster than TAG Heuer’s last timepiece phenomenon, the Carrera Mikrograph 1/100th second that was presented last year at Geneva.
TAG Heuer lists that in 1/1000th of a second:
– Usain Bolt ran 1.2 centimeters while establishing his new 100 m world record of 9.58 seconds
– a cheetah at top speed travels 3 centimeters
– the Maglev train between Pudong International Airport and Shanghai travels 14 centimeters
– an Airbus 380 between Zurich and Singapore flies 24 centimeters
– a supersonic airplane breaking Mach 1 flies 33 centimeters
– a M16 bullet flies 97 centimeters
– Apollo 10 traveled 10 meters while establishing the fastest-ever speed for a manned craft in 1969
– the Earth rotates 29.8 meters around the Sun
– a fast neutron travels 10 kilometers
– light travels 300 kilometers
. . . and most of all it can determine the difference between first and second place in a Formula 1 race.

TAG Heuer has a long standing reputation for challenging the limits of the mechanical precision in timepieces. TAG Heuer introduced the first 1/100th Mikrograph stopwatch as early as 1916. Also, all of TAG Heuer’s latest timepiece innovation has been completely developed and manufactured in-house and contains two escapements, regular time which has 28,800 beats per hour, and ultra fast time with has 3,600,000 beats per hour.
The ground-breaking design of this unique chronograph currently has eleven patents pending. Some of the innovations of this chronograph include:
1) No balance wheel
2) A mechanical regulating body with a high frequency 500Hz spiral
3) A dynamic lever/wheel transmission that rebounds on the wheel instead of sliding
4) A Launcher-Hub-Brake system controlled by a column wheel and made possible because of the increased rigidity of the spiral
The chronograph movement is contained within a 45mm titanium carbine coated case with a double anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The dial is black gold with white and green superluminova Arabic numerals. Water resistant up to 100 meters. The team at TAG Heuer says that the Mikrotimer Flying 1000 is still in the concept stage and still needs to be put through the series of testing that all TAG Heuer watches are subjected to.

TAG Heuer's Carrera Watches are Making Headlines

TimeCrafters – New York's First Luxury Watch Exhibition

New York is set to have its first luxury watch exhibition, dubbed “TimeCrafters,” to take place May 13th to May 15th. This exhibition will showcase nineteen of the world’s top watchmaking brands at the Time Center, part of the New York Times building. As the United States remains the second top consumer of Swiss watches, after Hong Kong, the purpose of TimeCrafters is to educate the public about the history and the latest developments from some of the watch world’s most distinguished brands. The exhibition will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, giving everyone the chance to experience Haute Horlogerie at its finest.

Nashville's Fashion Week Debut

Nashville will be hosting it’s first full-fledged fashion week, sponsored by Lexus. Lexus Nashville Fashion Week will take place Tuesday, March 29th to Saturday, April 2nd. Selecting jewelry for that perfect wedding day look can seem like an intimidating task, but remember that this should be the fun part! Wedding Dress Materials and Designs

Taking note of what materials are in the wedding dress is a simple way to pick jewelry. If there are pearls in the dress, wearing pearl jewelry would tie in well with the theme. The color of the wedding dress will also help determine what kind of metal you should stick to. Brighter white dresses tend to look better with silver or platinum jewelry. If there are additional colors in the dress such as blue, wear sapphires to incorporate it in the rest of the look, but be careful not too overdo it and match too much. Another option to narrow down jewelry choices is to use the colors in your wedding palette, such as the colors that can be found in the bouquet.

Necklaces

If your dress has a lot of elaborate details such as beading, lace, sequins, or pearls, a necklace will probably weigh your look down and become too busy. Otherwise, the cut of the dress will dictate what type of necklace would be best to wear.

Bateau

Since the cut of this dress is high on the collar-bone, we recommend staying away from necklaces and instead bring the glam with a stunning pair of chandelier or drop earrings.

Halter

A lariat works well with a halter-top dress. This necklace choice will accent your collar-bone, while the dangling part of the lariat accents the back of the dress.

Off-The Shoulder

This is another neckline where simpler necklaces work well because they emphasize the clean cut of the dress. Double stranded necklaces or diamonds by the yard will add an elongated feel to your look. Chokers will also work well, but note that they will also emphasize your shoulders and neck.

Open-Backed

For an open-backed dress, a lariat necklace is an amazing way to accent the cut of the dress as well as complement the curve of your back. This dangling embellishment will give your look an element of class whether you’re coming or going.

Strapless

The sky’s the limit for this neckline. Any necklace selection will look fantastic with this cut, although most brides tend to stick to more simple choices such as chokers or strands to tie-in with the clean look of a strapless gown. Sweetheart

Like the v-neck, the sweetheart neckline works well with a y-drop necklace because the lines of the necklace follow the lines of the top. Baselworld 2011 Preview: The Chanel J12 Chromatic Titanium Watch

The Chanel J12 watch line was first launched in 2000 and it was Chanel’s first unisex watch design. This year at Baselworld, Chanel is scheduled to release a new addition to this ever popular J12 Collection. This recent model is a ceramic titanium watch named the Chromatic. The combination of titanium and black ceramic gives this latest J12 watch a new glossy chicness. However, the sleek design is deceptive and the new titanium-ceramic combo gives the Chromatic a scratch-resistance that closely matches sapphire. The larger Chanel J12 Chromatic models, 38mm to 41mm in diameter, will have an automatic mechanical movement and the smaller cases, 33mm in diameter, will have a quartz movement. All Chromatic watches will be water resistant up to 200 meters.
