The No Fuss Guide to Watch Shopping

iwc portofino watch IW356504 C10651283

The holiday season is already upon us and with Black Friday around the bend, many people are starting to preemptively plan their gift lists. A well-made watch is often a good present for both men and women and they never go out of style. However, if you’re new to the watch world, the idea of investing in a watch might seem a little intimidating. How do you know what movement to pick? What style? What are complications? We’ve made a list of watch movements to simplify things so that you don’t walk into a store blind.

Mechanical Movement

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Grand GMT Men's Watch Q3022420

How does it work?
Mechanical movements are just that. The mainspring has to be manually-wound to keep the movement running. The mainspring unwinds slowly which releases energy to keep the gears turning. A mechanical or manual-wind movement will have an average of 36 to 40 hours of power reserve before it has to be wound again. But most owners of mechanical watches wind their watches once a day in order to make sure that it keeps running. Also, be sure to check that the watch is keeping accurate time at least once a month. Mechanical movement can lose or gain a few minutes over time.
Who would want a mechanical movement?
For anyone who appreciates genuine European craftsmanship, it’s hard to beat a classic watch with a mechanical movement. A well-made mechanical watch is always a thing of beauty and they’re often handed down as family heirlooms.

Automatic Movements

Hublot Aero Bang Black Magic Chronograph Men's Watch 311.CI.1170.CI

How does it work?
An automatic movement is a mechanical movement with a self-winding mechanism. This movement has a rotor keeps the mainspring wound. The rotor stays in motion through the movement produced by being worn on somebody’s wrist. The movement of the spinning rotor is then transferred to the mainspring. This watch will keep it’s power reserve as long as its in motion. If an automatic watch is not worn for several days at a time, then it will be need to be kept in a watch winder to maintain the power reserve. This watch will also require periodic checking to see if it’s keeping accurate time as a few minutes can be gained or lost over a month.
Who would want an automatic watch?
An automatic watch is just an amped up version of a mechanical watch so these watches are sure to have beautiful craftsmanship and sturdiness with the added benefit that they won’t have to be wound on a regular basis.

Quartz movements

Chanel J12 Black Ceramic & Gold Unisex Watch H2543

How does it work?
A quartz movement is simply a movement that requires a battery. The name “quartz” comes from the way that the battery works in conjunction with a quartz crystal. The battery passes an electric current through the quartz which then drives a motor that controls the watch hands. Batteries will have to be changed every year and a half or so. These watches are also very accurate any maybe only need to have the time modified once a year, if that.
Who would want a quartz movement?
A quartz watch are for those who prefer to leave it and forget about it. They don’t have to be continually wound to maintain accurate time and they generally require less maintenance than mechanical watches. Also, quartz watches are very affordable and there are styles to accommodate every budget.
This is just a brief introduction to the watch world. If you want to know more about watch details and complications, please visit our Watch Glossary for more information.

Ashley Greene Sports Stephen Webster at the Twilight: Breaking Dawn Premiere

On November 14th in Los Angeles at the Nokia Theater, actress Ashley Greene appeared at the Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 premiere sporting Stephen Webster jewels. Ashley Greene, who plays Alice Cullen in the movies, wore Stephen Webster’s ‘Fly by Night’ Cascade earrings in 18 karat white gold with black and white diamonds giving her bright red dress a suitably edgy look. The earrings were paired with a ‘Murder She Wrote’ Razor Ribbon Ring in 18 karat white gold with black and white diamond pave. This is not the actresses first foray into the world of Stephen Webster. She was photographed wearing the Stephen Webster Sharks Jaw Cuff in the 2010 August issue of Elle Magazine.
The design of ‘Fly By Night’ collection was inspired by nocturnal and winged creatures such as bugs, moths, nightingales, griffins, and of course, bats. Combine these motifs with dark designs of thorns, blackened gold, and black and white diamonds, these pieces embody Gothic glamour. Stephen Webster’s ‘Murder She Wrote’ collection has the flavor of 1940’s British mystery novels, with smoking guns, daggers, razor wire, and blood-colored ruby accents. Given the dark undercurrents of these collections, the pieces that Ashley Green wore couldn’t have be more appropriate for the premiere of a vampire movie.

Hublot's Tribute to the Antikythera Mechanism

hublot-antikythera-mechanism-watch
Hublot watches represent the fusion of the classic traditions of watch-making and innovative watch design for the future. Hublot’s latest brainchild is no exception to this pioneering spirit – the recreation of the Antikythera Mechanism in watch form. This watch will be a fusion of 200 BC at the dawn of watch-making history and the 21st century.
Antikythera-Mechanism
The Antikythera Mechanism is the most ancient astronomical calendar and analogue computer. In 1901 the Mechanism was discovered in the remains of a sunken ship off the coast of Antikythera, a Greek island. Date around 87 BC, the Antikythera Mechanism was built to chart not time, but the movements of the moon and various astrological calendars. This extraordinary creation was capable of showing the cycles such as the Metonic (19 years), Callippic cycle (76 years), Saros Cycle (18 years), and Exeligmos cycles (54 years) and was extraordinarily accurate.
These days, it is now believe to be possible that the machine came from Syracuse, in Sicily, and may have been one of the projects of mathematician extraordinaire Archimedes.
Hublot’s desire to undertake such a dauntingly ambitious project was purely for the love of horology and to show tribute to watch-making history. Mathias Buttet, the research development director for Hublot, said that the mechanism was extremely difficult to reproduce as it was complicated to miniaturize the gear ratio seen in the original piece.
hublot antikythera mechanism
The Hublot Antikythera Mechanism now has the claim of the first watch inspired by archaeological findings. All known indications of the original mechanism have been reproduced on the front and the back of the watch with the movement regulated by a tourbillion cage at the six o’clock position.
The case measures 30mm x 38mm and it is 14mm thick. The primary face shows calendar for Panhellenic games, Egyptian calendar, position of the sun in the constellations of the Zodiac, moon phases, and sidereal year. The back shows the Callippic, Metonic, Saros, and Exeligmos cycles.
Only four of these unique watches will be produced. The watches will go to the Athens Museum, the Musee des Arts de Metiers, the Hublot Museum, and the last watch will be auctioned for charity. The proceeds will go in support of the Athens Museum and the Musee des Arts de Metiers. If you happened to be in Switzerland next year, this watch will be presented at the spring 2012 Baselworld show.

Montblanc's "Beauty of a Second" Short-Film Contest

montblanc beauty of a second contest
Watch-nerds and amateurs alike are familiar with the chronograph. Once glance at the dial of a chronograph watch will show you the tell-tale sub-dials that can measure time to an accuracy of a fifth of a second. However, were you aware that this year marks the 190th anniversary of the invention of the chronograph? What’s more, did you know that the chronograph came about as a result of a horse race?
In 1821 King Louis XVIII of France asked his royal watchmaker, a man named Nicolas Rieussec, to develop a watch movement capable of recording the exact times of horses as they completed a race. Rieussec proceeded to develop a clock movement consisting of two rotating discs placed beneath an ink-filled tip. When the movement was set into motion, the tip of the ink tip would mark one of the dials in order to measure time. This movement, which Rieussec named the chronograph, was then set to have its first test during a horse race. On September 1st, Nicolas Rieussec’s creation successfully recorded the finishing time of every horse to an accuracy of a quarter of a second.

In honor of this fantastic achievement, Montblanc, in conjunction with award-winning director Wim Wenders, is holding a short film contest entitled “The Beauty of a Second.” Everyone is invited to submit a film using any recording device as long as the moving image lasts one second. The film can consist of any moment or anything that you consider beautiful.
The twenty best films are uploaded to www.montblanc-onesecond.com. There will be a second round of judging at the beginning of November where filmmakers have a second chance to upload a one second video clip to be judged by an group of esteemed panelists. The winner of this contest will be announced in January of 2012 and presented with the beautiful Montblanc Nicholas Rieussec Chronograph. The winner will also be invited to attend the Berlinale International Film Festival in Berlin to meet Wim Wenders at the “Beauty of a Second” awards ceremony.

If film-making is not your interest, Montblanc has also invited the public to enter a second competition by creating a 2 to 60 seconds film composed of the “Beauty of a Second” film entries and a soundtrack from Montblanc’s audio library. The winner for best compilation will also be presented with a Montblanc Nicholas Rieussec Chronograph.
