The Tables Have Turned: Leap Year Proposals

Ladies, get your rings ready. This year is a leap year and according to British Isles tradition, women can propose to men on February 29th. It’s hard to say when this tradition started, but it has been around for several hundred years. It came from a time when women had to wait for a proposal rather than take charge themselves. But in the same way that the leap year balances the calendar (365 days in a year versus the 365 days and 6 hours it takes for the earth to orbit the sun) it evens the gender playing field. In the 1800s and 1900s leap year postcards depicting women plotting to snag a man were rather popular.

However, the fine for refusing a woman’s proposal back then could be hefty. In Denmark, the man was supposed to give the rejected woman twelve pairs of gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having a ring. In Finland, the woman was owed enough fabric to make herself a skirt. In Norway, Queen Margaret of Scotland issued several fines ranging from a kiss, to one pound in money, to gloves, or a silk gown.
While leap year proposals may seem like an amusing old tradition, the fact is that more and more women every year are the ones popping the question. Surveys have said that anywhere from 5-7% of women have proposed to their boyfriends and this trend has lead to the development of men’s engagement (“mangagement”) rings. Even if the woman hasn’t done the proposing, it’s now fairly common for both men and women to sport rings to indicate their engagement. After all, women aren’t the only ones who like diamonds.

Engagement Rings with Halos for Valentine’s Day

Forevermark Double Halo Round Diamond Engagement Ring

Halo engagement rings are the perfect combination between a diamond solitaire and a vintage engagement ring. The halos allow for a little more glamour while simultaneously making the center stone appear larger. For these rings, it’s all about the center stone and the band is often plain or has a few diamond and milgrain embellishments.
Engagement ring halos are just what they sound like. They are most commonly a border of pave white diamonds encircling the center stone. While halos are most commonly made of diamonds, a modern twist on this trend might be a plain circle of metal or it will be set with a colored gemstone such as sapphires. Natalie Portman’s engagement ring features a double diamond halo framing her four carat round-cut diamond.
A. Jaffe for Forevermark Round Diamond & Pave Halo Engagement RingThis A. Jaffe for Forevermark engagement ring mounting is an example of the classic halo design. The shank is a simple slender polished band and the halo, rather than being a single row of diamonds is instead a pave diamond circle. It’s easy to see how much that simple halo shows off a beautiful round-cut diamond.

Spin Me Right Round: Twisted Shank Engagement Rings for Valentine’s Day

If you’re looking for a fresh new approach to engagement ring design, the twisted shank is definitely the way to go. The twists and intertwining loops make these mountings look supremely stylish and still maintain a romantic feel. If your girl is a bona fied fashionista, she’ll love this clean look for a Valentine’s Day proposal.
The beauty of this particular engagement ring design is its flexibility in design. There’s an endless number of ways to arrange, split, divide and twist the ring shank that only enhances the look of the center stone and is sure to certify a one-of-a-kind look. Creating an elaborate ring shank can be a cost-effective way of showing off a diamond solitaire instead of relying on diamond accents. But if bling is your thing, the design of the ring band can be enhanced by patterns of diamond pave for a more whimsical look.
Besides being a spectacular look, sometimes twisted ring shanks can provide better support for the center stone and help it look larger. Elaborate engagement ring bands may also require a custom wedding band to fit the shape of the engagement ring. Fortunately, many jewelry brands such as Michael M. and Norman Silverman offer tracer wedding bands that will do just that. Not to mention it will make a bridal set worthy of turning just about anybody’s head.
A.Jaffe’s new designs strictly for Forevermark diamonds showcase this twisted engagement ring style the best. These beautiful bands almost look branch-like with their intertwining designs. What’s more is that they have plain platinum settings for those who like it sweet and simple as well as pave diamond versions for sparkling splendor.

Past, Present, & Future: Representing Love at All Stages with a Ring

Forevermark Diamond Feature: Three-Stone Diamond Engagement Ring
Three-stone rings are one of the most classic ring designs because of their beautiful simplicity and their rich meaning. A three-stone ring is meant to represent a couple’s past, present, and future together. The center stone is often the largest to commemorate the present moment in which the ring was given with a smaller stone on either side for the memories before and the memories to come.
With this rich symbolism, the three-stone ring is a popular choice for engagement rings, anniversaries, holidays, and any milestones that a couple shares. Some couples will even have an engagement ring solitaire re-made into a three-stone ring as an anniversary gift.
While the three gemstones are often round-cut diamonds, many people will chose to add additional meaning by making the side stones birthstones rather than diamonds. Trios of emerald, oval, and princess-cut diamonds have also become popular choices for three-stone rings in recent years. Here are some additional color combinations to express certain meanings:

Red and white – Unity, harmony
Red and Yellow – Happiness, celebration, joy, congratulations
Yellow and white – Harmony
Yellow and orange – Passion
Norman Silverman Radiant Yellow & Trapezoid Diamond Engagement Ring

Three-stone rings aren’t just for women anymore either. There has been an increase in diamond designs for men’s rings over the years. Men’s three stone rings often have all three of the gemstones the same size and in a flush-setting rather than a prong-setting to give it a more masculine look.

Eternal Love: Eternity Rings for Valentine’s Day

Hearts are naturally one of the most popular choices in jewelry design for Valentine’s Day. What represents love better than a heart? If you’re looking for something unique this Valentine’s Day, tell her not only that you love her, but that you’ll love her forever with an eternity ring.

The History of Eternity Rings

Eternity rings share a similar history with wedding bands. Wearing a ring on the left-hand ring finger stems from an old Egyptian belief that that particular finger contained a vein that led directly to the heart. Eternity rings are different from the traditional wedding ring in that they are set with gemstones of the same size and cut all the way around the band, symbolizing eternity. Since wedding bands symbolize marriage, eternity bands are often a popular choice for anniversaries as a way to re-affirm eternal love.
The popularity of eternity rings was revitalized in the 1960’s by De Beers, the renowned diamond merchants responsible for the prestigious Forevermark Diamond brand. They were advertised as an ideal anniversary gift for married women.

Eternity Ring Styles

Eternity rings are commonly set with round-cut diamonds, but styles have changed to include other gemstones such as sapphires and rubies and princess cuts. The gemstones are either flush-set (directly into the metal) or channel-set (the gemstones have a metal edge above and below along the ring shank. This makes it more comfortable to wear eternity rings since the gemstones are set all the way around the band and prong settings would get in the way.

How to Wear an Eternity Ring

Tacori Crescent Pave Diamond Milgrain Women's Wedding RingThe wedding ring always goes on first. After that, it’s just a matter of preference as to whether to wear your engagement ring next, the eternity band, or just the eternity band with the wedding band. Although it has become more popular to have a wedding band that is an eternity band.
Regardless of style, an eternity ring is a classic gift of undying love that will be sure to make anyone feel cherished on Valentine’s Day.
