Our birthstone spotlight comes to you a little late this month due to all the excitement of Baselworld. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t love this month’s birthstone, aquamarine. This gemstone is a beautifully soft blue-green color that always looks striking when paired with white metals, and it goes with any eye and hair color combination. It’s traces of iron in the crystal structure that give aquamarine its color. Like with most gemstones the darker and more intense the color, the more valuable. Part of the beryl family, the aquamarine is also closely related to emeralds.
There are a couple of famous aquamarine gemstones in history. One of the largest pieces of aquamarine was found in Marambaya, Brazil back in 1910. This gemstone, known as the “Minas Gerais” weighted 243 lbs and was cut into gems with a total weight of over 100,000 carats. Another famous aquamarine is the “Dom Pedro” weighing 57 lbs and was cut by Bernd Munsteiner in 1992.
It comes as no surprise that aquamarine is associated with all things pertaining to sea. It has the reputation of being the jewel found in mermaids’ treasure chests and was a protective talisman for sailors at sea. It is also linked with the planet Neptune, the ocean planet.

Animal Themed Jewelry: A Fierce Trend for the Spring Season

A trend that was favored last year is still evidently still going strong with major fine jewelers this year, if the jewelry selections at Baselworld are any indicator. At Baselworld this year Roberto Coin continued to build upon their current “Animalier” collection with more extravagant pieces. Incorporating animals into our jewelry seems almost primal. Since age-old times certain pieces of jewelry have been embodied the wild. Many forms of ancient royalty and modern royalty have symbolized and expressed their royal power and status with animals and accessories. Today, this approach is a little more contemporary. Maybe slightly more charming and considerably more glamorous.

One jeweler that coordinates collections of animal jewelry very well is the Italian luxury designer Roberto Coin. Dwayne Wade & Jean-Claude Biver Present the Hublot Big Bang Miami Heat Watch

Just released today are some teasers of the partnership of Hublot and basketball team Miami Heat. The teasers show the acclaimed Big Bang collection in a rose gold version with Miami Heat color theme on the dial and also includes the team’s logo at 3 o’clock. Also the numerals used on the dial seem to be adaptations from numbers of the sport. Not much information has been released about this collaboration or the release date. We will keep you updated. 2012 Lexus Nashville Fashion Week is Here!

Blue sky, warm sun, a fine dusting of pollen coating your car . . . there’s no doubt that spring is here. Along with the warm weather and blooming flowers, Lexus Nashville Fashion Week has finally arrived! After being trapped in doors for the last few months, nothing clears out the winter gloom like a whole week dedicated to new colors and styles.
This year Fashion Week runs from March 20th to March 24th. While some of the trends exhibited may stem from New York Fashion Week, rest assured that this fashion show has its own Nashville flair featuring local and regional design stars and vendors.
Some of the trends you can expect to see and this year’s Nashville Fashion Week are florals prints, soft and detailed designs, and a mix of 1920s and 1950s silhouettes, according to Nashville Lifestyles. Baselworld 2012 Spotlight: Harry Winston Opus 12 Watch

Every year many anticipate what Harry Winston will be revealing at Baselworld. Last year in 2011 Harry Wintson introduced the Opus 11 which was a very unique and complex piece that used “pallets” to indicate time. The official Opus 11 video can be seen here.
This year Harry Winston unveils another exceptional timepiece to Baselworld 2012 with the Opus 12. The Opus 12 was in collaboration with Emanual Bouchet, an expert watchmaker whose passion stands to create genuine timepieces that have exceptional and complex ways of telling time. The Opus 12 features another nontraditional way of displaying time. Instead of using conventional hands that extrude from the center, the Opus 12 uses inverted hands that protrude from the outer brim inwards. The short blue hand indicates the hours and the longer hand mark the minutes.
These hands animate on the minutes and hours by flipping and turning to introduce a new of way of expressing time. Because the main minute hand only works in five minute increments, a minute indicator is incorporated that works also as a power reserve. Keeping in mind that the Opus 12 has over 600 parts and has 2 mainspring barrels this piece (one of which is dedicated just for the movement of the hands), the power reserve is only about 45 hours.
Harry Wintson Opus 12 is approximately 46mm wide and the core of the case is made of Harry Winston’s zirconium alloy. It will also be available in polished18k white gold and other versions will include diamonds. The Opus 12 are limited editions and only 120 pieces of each version will be crafted. The approximate price is said to be $260,000.

Baselworld 2012 Spotlight: Hublot Big Bang Ferrari Watch

The official unveiling of the watch that makes you wish you could rev time. Last November was the announcement of the collaboration between famous sports car manufacturer Ferrari and acclaimed watchmaker Hublot. This is truly a great paring.
Hublot introduces a new material on this watch they developed called “Magic Gold,” which is a scratch resistant alloy of gold and ceramic used for the case. The case at 45.5 mm in diameter is also slightly larger than the previous Big Bang models and is the first alteration of the Big Bang case since it was introduced in 2005. There are endless amounts of inspiration from Ferrari including a new rotor added to resemble one of the wheels of a Ferrari wheel. Other notable Ferrari theme includes the minute counter that appear as a tachometer and carbon fiber inserts on the side of the case. Not only the Ferrari logo is marked on the profile of the watch but Ferrari’s famous Cavallino can be found at 9 o’clock to give it the humble presence of the brand’s legacy.
The watch also comes with two interchangeable straps that are made to be quickly replaced inspired by a car’s seat belt function. They have even added influences from the interior upholstery of a Ferrari to the stitching found on the watch straps. The Ferrari Big Bang is also available in a Titanium as well. This is a remarkable collaboration that highlights the brilliance and precision of both brands as well as their capabilities of marvelous execution in their trade.

Baselworld 2012 Spotlight: HYT H1 Fluid Watch

HYT recently revealed the H1 after months of teasers and anticipation. Looking like something out of the movies, this Swiss made timepiece is absolutely the most contemporary piece released this year as Baselworld 2012. It uses an advanced fluorescent liquid technology to indicate time.
The secret is fluid mechanics. The set of two bellows made of highly resistant and flexible alloy compresses the reservoirs by the power of pistons. The CEO, Vincent Perriard is an ecstatic individual who is driven on his concept and design decisions based on futurism and uniqueness. His design theories ultimately called to create this rather large 48.8mm wide and 17.8 thick timepiece. Other aesthetic features he wanted to incorporate were the decoration and finishes of classic timepieces. One of the solutions to accomplish this was by displaying the manually wound movement that can be seen on the back above the two bellows. Also includes a 65 hour power reserve indicator found neatly on the upper right side.
The H1 is available in 4 finishes; Titanium, Black DLC, 18kt Pink Gold with Black DLC, and 18kt Pink Gold. The starting price on the H1 is $45,000.

Baselworld 2012 Spotlight: Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky Dweller

The long anticipated release of the new addition to the Rolex Oyster collection has been officially released at Baselworld 2012. The new Oyster Perpetual Sky Dweller was uniquely designed for the global traveler.
