Watch Spotlight: Chopard's Classic Manufacture Watch

The elegantly understated Classic heralds a new collection at Chopard. Equipped with a new mechanical movement developed and produced in-house, it is inspired by the magnificent pocket-watches that Louis-Ulysse Chopard had made his speciality, and symbolises the encounter between tradition and modernity.
Like a fragment of history that has found its way unscathed through time thanks to its noble and understated character, the new Classic Manufacture by Chopard is a bridge between past and present, a link between the prestigious pocket-watches that forged the reputation of brand founder Louis-Ulysse Chopard, and modern-day wristwatches. As its name implies, everything about the design of the Classic Manufacture reflects the delightful classicism of the Belle Epoque: the porcelain-type dial provides a perfect setting for the shiny black Roman numerals; the small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock features a “railtrack” graduation typical of the pocket-watches of the era; and the slender gold-toned hands set the finishing touch to the perfectly harmonious overall effect.

A new “in-house” movement

Available in 18-carat rose, white or yellow gold, this timepiece with its refined exterior is equipped with the calibre Chopard 01.04-C, a new mechanical self-winding movement entirely developed in-house and produced in the workshops of Fleurier Ebauches, the Chopard Group unit in charge of the industrial production of movements not destined for its L.U.C Haute Horlogerie collection. After certain models of the Imperiale collection in 2011, it is now the turn of the first timepiece in the Classic collection to receive an “in-house” movement. The third reference produced by the Fleurier Ebauches workshops, the calibre Chopard 01.04-C drives the hour and minute hands, along with small seconds and a date display at 3 o’clock. Beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, it guarantees a generous 60-hour power reserve.
The beautifully rounded 38 mm-diameter case features an 18-carat gold crown and an exhibition back. The Classic Manufacture is fitted with a matt black alligator leather strap fitted with an 18-carat gold pin buckle.

Elite Traveler's Recommendations for the Connoisseur of Haute Horologerie

jerome dewittStill relatively young, the DeWitt manufacture was founded in 2003 by Jerome DeWitt, who wanted to create a brand that reflected his vision of watches with complications following the traditional Swiss rules of watchmaking. Success and recognition came quickly when in 2005, the manufacture won the first prize for innovation at the Grand Prix de l’horlogerie in Geneva for his patented differential system on his Academia Tourbillon. Where the brand truly excelled is when it comes to pushing the boundaries of traditional watchmaking. This was particularly striking when the WX-1 Concept was launched in 2007, a project that one could call ground-breaking, featuring a vertical flying tourbillon and five barrels, giving the watch an amazing 21-day power reserve ability. The unique case construction using avant-guardiste materials such as aluminium-lithium, grade 5 titanium, gold, steel among others ensured it was relatively lightweight (191 grams) but also contributed to its “steampunk” industrial look.
Where DeWitt really pushed its creativity was with its collaboration with the Only Watch project, creating complete new concepts from beginning to end ensuring ultimate exclusivity. On their last project in 2011, DeWitt created an all-new watch, named Concept Watch No. 3 (shown on cover), a tourbillon with double bi-retrograde hours and minutes that featured a unique X shaped-case that allowed the entire watch to be easily rotated to display the reverse with a simple flick. The watch generated a lot of buzz among the DeWitt collectors and ended up selling for an incredible 410,000 euros.
Innovative, unusual, DeWitt creations are sure to inspire fascination and present the opportunity for watch aficionados to discover a brand that will give them the unique and different look they are seeking.

Twenty-8-Eight Automatic – Sunshine On Your Wrist

Twenty-8-Eight Automatic
The Twenty-8-Eight Automatic is a lively and sunny timepiece, remarkably refined and sober. The face of the watch is artistically divided in two different guilloché zones. In the centre, a light flame pattern provides incredible life to the dial as the slightest wrist movement will animate the flames in graceful reflections. The second pattern, at the perimeter, takes the form of a regular and reassuring sunray that structures the whole design. Flames and sunrays are separated by a fine circle applique that gives a final touch of shiny elegance and echoes the thin and polished columns on the bezel.
Time has never been more readable as large Roman numerals are positioned on the four cardinal points and discretely interconnected by small Arabic numerals positioned at five minutes intervals. The warm and welcoming chocolate-brown iteration reflects the classic ambience of many pieces in the DeWitt museum.

Twenty-8-Eight Regulator A.S.W. Horizons

TWENTY-8-EIGHT - REGULATOR A.S.W. HORIZONS
The Twenty-8-Eight Regulator A.S.W. Horizons Automatic Tourbillon invites all watch lovers to a journey through the sky, travelling across their favourite horizon and taking an aerial view of their favourite city, their favourite constructions with a tribute to sleek Art Déco design, and in particular to the post Great Depression trends explored in America. The Twenty-8-Eight Regulator A.S.W. Horizons is truly an illustration in creativity with its peripheral bi-directional oscillating rotor, dead beat second connected to the tourbillon and its ingenious automatic winding system than maintains an optimal range of 92 to 96 percent wind.

Twenty-8-Eight Tourbillon – 100% Manufacture

TWENTY-8-EIGHT TOURBILLON
With the Twenty-8-Eight Tourbillon, DeWitt took a major step forward as the calibre DW8028 was its first entirely home-made Tourbillon movement. This landmark in the history of the brand showcases yet again the depth of its know-how and its autonomy.
The DeWitt calibre DW8028 is a manually wound movement integrating a solid and reliable Tourbillon mechanism. Its construction is rather classical, using age-old and recognized technical parameters as a basis: 18,000 A/h, 72 hours power reserve. The movement is equipped with a Swiss anchor escapement with a variable-inertia balance and a spiral with a Breguet curve sequenced at 2.5 Hz. The balance, as well as the escape wheel and the anchor are made of 18 carat yellow gold.
The Twenty-8-Eight Tourbillon fully complies with the very demanding finishing norms of the DeWitt Manufacture. Entirely hand-made, the finishing is of a rare quality and can be observed through the sapphire crystal back.

Academia – Tourbillon Differentiel

ACADEMIA—TOURBILLION DIFFERENTIEL
A colourful, whirling tourbillon of precious metals, platinum and gold adorn a major innovation that has already made watchmaking history. Patented in 2005, Dewitt’s Tourbillon Différentiel mechanism represents a significant breakthrough with respect to the basic working principles of a mechanical movement. Traditionally housed in a case of rose gold, the Tourbillon Différentiel is clothed in 950 platinum, 18-carat rose gold and a blend of 18-carat rose and white gold.
The Tourbillon Différentiel makes history with its ingenious patented power-reserve winding system in a tourbillon-equipped watch. While regulating complications correct a mechanical watch’s precision by compensating for the effects of Earth’s gravity, the differential system developed by DeWitt increases watch-winding speed considerably (by two-thirds in fact). DeWitt’s system drastically simplifies the construction of conventional planetary gears.

Academia – Double Fuseau GMT2 Poetic

ACADEMIA—DOUBLE FUSEAU GMT2 POETIC
A recognized pioneer in the pursuit of extremes, DeWitt once again asserts its avant-garde approach to the field of fine watchmaking with this member of the iconic Academia family. The neoclassical-inspired Academia Double Fuseau GMT2 Poetic highlights artistic crafts by demonstrating the brand’s mastery of the noblest of Swiss watchmaking traditions.
Daring combinations of materials and colours are the unmistakable signature touch of the DeWitt master-watchmakers. The Academia Double Fuseau GMT2 Poetic revisits the flagship Academia collection with considerable creativity. Framed by the famous DeWitt imperial columns, its 43mm dial is graced by a globe motif made from “Goldfluss,” an extremely rare synthetic “gold-glass” crystal featuring gold and silver-coloured “teardrop” inclusions. This exquisitely delicate design encapsulates the full measure of horological excellence cultivated by DeWitt.

Academia – Tourbillon Constante a Chaine

ACADEMIA — TOURBILLON CONSTANTE À CHAÎNE
The Tourbillon Force Constante à Chaîne most definitely belongs to the exclusive circle of highly complicated masterpieces. Combining 18-carat white gold with DeWitt’s emblematic black face, this creation releases appealing technical ambiance; the perfect atmosphere to peacefully observe the mechanical wonders of this work of art. When it was launched in 2006, the Tourbillon Force Constante represented a landmark development in watchmaking history, providing the answer to a question as old as the mechanical movement itself: DeWitt’s solution involves inserting an additional mechanism into a traditional mechanical movement in order to exchange variable or even irregular motive power, for another option: perfectly constant force. In other words, the device is designed to transmit identical and regular impulses, regardless of the tautness of the barrel-spring.

WX-1 – Far More Than A Watch

dewitt wx-1 watch
The first watch concept by DeWitt submitted to the OnlyWatch auction serves as a contemporary objet d’art and lends a whole new dimension to the watchmaking world. This exceptional creation embodies a range of cultural values merging design, futurism, sophisticated construction of its various elements, and an original interpretation of time read-off. Time and creation, mental architecture and spatial construction all unite in a unique vision of tomorrow. This pure multidimensional concept of presenting the time offers an entirely new vision of watchmaking.
The original concept was quite simple: Create a watch that was different from and, indeed, far more than a watch. How could one best marry authentic technological innovations and advanced aesthetics? Everything about WX-1 confirms that this daring bid has been successful in terms of both form and content.

Watch Spotlight: Chopard Mille Miglia GT XL Chrono Speed Silver

In 2011, Chopard presented the Mille Miglia GT XL Chrono Rossa Corsa, a timepiece paying tribute to the red colour of classic Italian racing cars. The Racing Colours collection now welcomes the Speed Silver model, a timepiece featuring shimmering reflections reminiscent of the legendary German speed machines that dominated motor-racing competitions in the 1930s.
By clothing the dial of the new Mille Miglia in a silver livery, Chopard is adding a new reference to its Racing Colours collection that evokes the colour-coded livery of cars taking part in international motor races until the late 1960s. Germany is in the spotlight this year with the Mille Miglia GT XL Chrono Speed Silver, with other Racing Colours to follow in the near future.

The origin of Racing Colours

The origin of Racing Colours dates back to the Gorden Bennett Cup, the famous car race launched in 1900 and pitting national teams against each other. This competition gave rise to “Vintage Blue” for France, “Rosso Corsa” for Italy, “British Racing Green”, “Speed Yellow” for Belgium, and finally “Speed Silver” for Germany.
The new Mille Miglia GT XL Chrono Speed Silver features a generous 44 mm-diameter polished titanium case. Its brushed silver-toned dial bears hollowed and snailed silver-toned counters and makes a stylish and refined match with the stitching on the black leather strap, while the minute numerals transferred on the inner bezel ring lend a touch of colour typical of dashboard speedometers. Its oversized 6 and 12 o’clock Arabic numerals transferred beneath the sapphire crystal lend an impressive and modern touch that enhances the technical side of the timepiece. Its aerodynamic titanium pushers, along with its tachometric scale engraved on the bezel, enhance its sporting nature. The perfect overall readability is highlighted by a glare proofed sapphire crystal with built-in magnified date window at 3 o’clock. The exhibition back is fitted with a sapphire crystal providing a view of the movement proudly bearing the Speed Silver logo.

A limited edition

The case equipped with a screw-locked crown is water-resistant to 100 metres. It houses a mechanical self-winding movement chronometer-certified by the COSC and beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, meaning 4 Hertz, and endowed with a 46-hour power reserve. It drives the hours, minutes, small seconds at 9 o’clock, date display at 3 o’clock and chronograph function with central sweep seconds hand, 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock and 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock. As befits its exclusive nature, the Mille Miglia GT XL Chrono Speed Silver model is issued in a 1,000-piece limited edition.

Top 5 Diving Watches for the Summer

iwc aquatimer deep two watch
If you’re in the middle of a heat wave like us, all of your thoughts turn towards the water. The summer isn’t complete without some kind of excursion to the water whether it’s the lake, the pool, or the ocean. But for you diving enthusiasts, the water isn’t a daytrip but a lifestyle and one of the key tools for diving is none other than the diving watch. We’ve put together a list of our Top 5 Diving Watches that not only excel in the diving field, but are stylish enough to go straight from diving to a dinner date.

1) IWC Aquatimer Deep Two Watch

iwc deep two
With a solid history of timekeeping for yacht races, IWC is a master of building watches for water sports. The Aquatimer Deep Two goes a step beyond the average diving watch and has a mechanical depth gauge to ensure the maximum amount of safety. This watch, water resistant to 120 meters, has a backup system to plan dive depth and time in the event there is a mechanical failure with other diving computers. The three color coded scales on the dial indicate the actual dive depth (blue), the maximum depth (red), and a pressure measuring system (white).

2) Bell & Ross Hydromax Watch

bell and ross hydromax black
Bell & Ross is mostly known for their rugged, vintage dashboard design pilot watches, but they also know how to make a solid diving watch. The Hydromax was developed to withstand the rigorous ordeal of diving conditions. This watch is equipped with a quartz movement and is water resistant up to a whopping 11,100 meters, a feat achieved by filling the watch case with transparent Hydroil. The watch case was designed to compensate for the expansion and contraction of the fluid that ensures complete waterproofness.

3) Breitling Avenger Seawolf Watch

breitling avenger seawolf
Breitling’s famous Avenger series has constructed a powerful diving watch, water resistant up to 3,000 meters. Even though it’s built to withstand these depths, this watch has been kept at a very reasonable diameter of 44mm. The Seawolf’s titanium case is also equipped with a safety valve that automatically evacuates the built up helium in the case at 30 meters, and reduce the pressure on the case. And with a cool name like the Seawolf, how can you resist?

4) Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Diving Navy SEALs Watch

This watch was designed with suggestions from none other than actual Navy SEALs. The bezel is equipped with a matte surface for minimum light reflection, its engineered to stand up to all kinds of conditions, and it is water resistant up to 300 meters. The sharp contrast of the white on black numerals and the powerful Super-LumiNova coated ensures long lasting readability in the dark. The Master Compressor watch, like all Jaeger-LeCoultre watches, has been submitted to 1,000 hours of testing to make certain of its reliability.

5) TAG Heuer Aquaracer 500m Watch

TAG Heuer also has over 80 years of standing behind yachtman. This particular Aquaracer was named as the “Alpha Male” of Aquaracers at Baselworld in 2009 and instead of stainless steel for the bezel, this model uses ceramic due to its more scratch resistant nature and fade-resistant. The helium valve and crown have rubber grips for better handling. The streamlined look of the black model sure makes this watch easy on the eyes, in and out of the water.

2012 Bridal Trends: Rose Gold Engagement and Wedding Rings

benchmark wedding rings
With its soft pink hue and romantic name, rose gold is becoming one of the most popular (and economical) choices for the bridal world. More girls are favoring this feminine material for engagement rings, wedding bands, diamond hoops . . . if you wear it on your wedding day, there will be a rose gold option.
Women everywhere are looking for a unique design for their engagement ring, and not surprisingly designers who create vintage-inspired pieces, like Tacori and Kwiat, were the first to embrace this rose gold trend. Vintage engagement rings already have an assortment of design elements like floral motifs, filigree, milgrain, and beading for an endless variety of combinations. It only makes sense to take that extra step and choose a unique metal as well.
Yellow gold and white gold have naturally been the champions of the bridal world and make up over 75% of bridal designs. Rose gold gets its color from making an alloy of yellow gold and copper. Rose gold, besides being a romantic look, gives that extra option to individuals who don’t believe that yellow gold complements their skin tone.
The most important thing when choosing your engagement ring and wedding band, is to make sure you’re happy. Many women may be concerned about rose gold rings looking dated in a few years, but if you love the look it will never go out of style.
Here’s some rose gold inspiration for your engagement and wedding rings!
