About Cartier Timepieces
The Cartier Watch, known as “The House of Cartier” was originally a jewelry boutique, was founded in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier. It was not long before the fine craftsmanship of Louis Cartier became recognized for superior quality and the standard for excellence of Cartier Watches. About 50 years later, his three grandsons were successfully managing Cartier watch boutiques in Paris, London and New York. Today, Cartier watches are distributed internationally and are world renowned for luxury timekeeping. Modern Cartier watchmakers still base their watch designs on the early fundamentals developed by Louis Cartier. In 2012, Cartier celebrates the long awaited launch of the Cartier Tank Anglaise, known as the Cartier English Tank watch that completes the families of Cartier Tank collections.

TAG Heuer's Carrera 1887 "SpaceX" Limited Edition: The First Watch in Space

Tag Heuer Carrera SpaceX Watch
Tag Heuer Carrera SpaceX Watch

TAG Heuer releases the Carrera 1887 SpaceX, a limited edition timepiece to mark the 50th anniversary of TAG Heuer (originally Heuer) as the first Swiss timepiece to be worn in space. The original TAG Heuer was worn by astronaut John Glenn in 1962. He had worn a modified Heuer 2915A stopwatch.
Although the new Carrera SpaceX is based on TAG’s standard 1887 Carrera it features some impressive attributes to commemorate the historical event. The watch hands are custom and have quite a resemblance to the 1962 stop watch. The dial is starch white with anthracite colored hour markers that match the custom hands. The numbers on the dial also have a vintage look as mirrored on John Glenn’s watch. The watch is finally fitted perfectly with a brown perforated strap that seems to satisfy the modern but old school taste.

Inside the watch it houses the powerful in-house caliber 1887 that is semi-visible through the smoked-sapphire case back. Also on the case back you can find the SpaceX logo and SpaceX’s Falcon 9 launch rocket and the Dragon spacecraft which also found on the dial of the watch as well. This piece is limited to 2,012 pieces and expected to be priced around $5,800 and should be available this October 2012.

Montblanc Reveals New Pablo Picasso Limited Edition Pens

Montblanc Pablo Picasso Limited Edition Pen

Montblanc has unveiled two new artisan edition Pablo Picasso limited edition pens. In honor of the Spanish painter and sculptor, Montblanc has created a very unique and creative writing instrument that celebrates his lifetime of achievements.
Beyond his surrealism and cubism paintings he was also a literary inspiration. Between 1935 and 1959 he was a writer of uncontainable passion. His works did not fit any particular category nor did he worry about the rules of grammar. The influential artist wrote three theatrical works as well as 300 poems in the form of a diary that ranged from simple prose to short stories.

The two pens released to pay homage to Pablo Picasso are the Artisan Edition Pablo Picasso Limited Edition 39 and Artisan Edition Pablo Picasso Limited Edition 91. Both pens were created to share design characteristics and his recognition in the cubist movement as well as his other varieties of works. The aesthetics of the pen was mainly derived by the writings of Picasso and the drawing “Portrait de jeune fille” from 1936, while the shape of the fountain pens is based upon the shape of a pencil and the engraving is based on his famous drawing “Ojo”.

Limited edition of 91 features the 18k gold skeletonised cap and has an opening that allows the 18k rhodium plated gold nib to be seen. Comments and outlines of Picasso’s famous work, “Portrait de jeune fille” are engraved in black. The shape of the black lacquered body mimics the shape of a pencil that Picasso drew his sketches with. The cap is embellished with the Montblanc emblem made from mother-of-pearl. Picasso’s Spanish background is also featured and the end of the barrel with lacquered red bands between the bands of 18k gold. Only 91 units are available as a tribute to the number of years that the artist lived.

The montblanc “star” can be found in the upper part of the cap. The Hope Diamond

As we head into October, we’ve decided to get into the spirit of the season with our top six most mysterious gemstones. We leave it up to you to decide how real the curses may be.

There are few things on this earth that are more infamous or more coveted than the Hope Diamond. In fact, the Hope Diamond has been labeled as the second-most visited piece of artwork after the Mona Lisa. This rare, exceptionally beautiful blue diamond weighing 45.52 carats also has a history rife with intrigue, theft, and misfortune to boot, only adding to its allure and leaving many to believe that the Hope Diamond is cursed. It doesn’t help matters that the diamond has a mysterious trait of after being exposed to ultraviolet light, the diamond will give off a faint red glow.

Many Believe the Hope Diamond is Cursed

Although the origins surrounding the Hope Diamond are somewhat foggy, it is generally believed that the Hope Diamond was originally mined from one of the first diamond mines in the world in the Golconda region of India. The gem was first mentioned in a report from French gem merchant Jean Baptiste Tavernier in the 17th century. Named initially as the Tavernier Blue, it was recorded as weighing 112 carats and Tavernier fails to mention how the gem was acquired or when.
Jean Baptiste Tavernier

In 1668 Tavernier proceeds to sell the diamond to King Louis XIV of France with 14 other larger diamonds. Five years later King Louis directs the court jeweler, Sieur Pitau, to re-cut the stone. The diamond is reduced to a little over 67 carats and is renamed the “Blue Diamond of the Crown” or the “French Blue” and worn mostly for ceremonial purposes.
The diamond remained in the French court until 1791, when after Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette tried to flee France during the beginning of the French Revolution, the jewels were turned over to the French Royal Treasury. In 1792 during a stint of looting, the French Blue diamond is stolen and disappears from history.

Word of the diamond does not appear again until 1812 when records appear that it is in the possession of Daniel Eliason, a London diamond merchant. It is believed that King George IV of England must have acquired the stone at some point and then later sold it in order to pay off his massive debts.
The next mention of the diamond is in a catalog entry in 1839 belonging to Henry Philip Hope. The diamond is now 45.52 carats and there is no mention of where it came from or how Hope acquired it. After Hope’s death in 1839, the diamond was passed through Hope’s family and sold multiple times before it was finally purchased in 1909 by Pierre Cartier.

In 1912, Evalyn Walsh McLean purchased the diamond from Cartier, who had by then reset the diamond as a pendant with a white diamond halo. Evalyn is probably the most notorious example of the fabled Hope Diamond curse. Her son was killed in a car crash, her daughter committed suicide, and her husband was committed to a mental institution.

After McLean’s death in 1947, Harry Winston purchased her jewelry collection, including the Hope Diamond. Harry Winston donated the diamond to the Smithsonian museum in 1958, but they still handle the diamond’s maintenance. In 2010 Harry Winston designed a new setting for the diamond known as “Embracing Hope.”

Whether cursed or not, the Hope Diamond continues to hold the captivation of the public eye as one of the most beautiful and intriguing objects to date.

September Birthstone Spotlight: Sapphire

blue sapphire image
The Sapphire is the Birthstone for September

Although sapphires come in a range of colors, the one the sapphire is best known for is that striking royal blue. Sapphire, derivative of the Greek word for “blue,” is a variety of the mineral Corundum. This gem is prominent among the British Crown Jewels, and is considered to be symbolic of wisdom and purity. Sapphires are second only to diamonds in hardness, and because of their lustrous blue color they have enjoyed a certain level of import throughout history.
As early as 800 B.C. Persians believed that the world rested on a blue sapphire and its reflection gave the sky its color. In 12th century Abbess Hildegard of Bingen stated that sapphires had the capability of improving one’s intellect and in India sapphires are thought to bring misfortune.
Abbess Hildegard of Bingen
Blue sapphires are commonly associated with fidelity, sincerity, and truth. These attributes were initially promoted in the 18th century because of the story ” Le Saphir Merveilleux ” by Madame de Genlis . The story describes a sapphire that is blue by day and purple by night, which made it a popular stone choice for engagement rings in the 18th and 19th centuries until the sapphire was usurped by the diamond.

Stunning Star of India Blue Sapphire

The largest blue sapphire to date is the Star of India at 563.33 carats, discovered nearly 300 years ago in Sri Lanka. It is unusual in that it has a star shape on either side of the milky gemstone and it was donated to the American Museum of Natural History by financier J.P. Morgan in 1900.

The largest cut sapphire is the Queen Marie of Romania Sapphire. This sapphire, one of the prize pieces in Cartier’s collections, is a cushion shaped gem weighing 478 carats. The sapphire was purchased by King Ferdinand of Romania in 1921.
Queen Mary of Romania sapphire
Although not the biggest, the most famous sapphires belong to royalty such as the Stuart Sapphire in the Imperial State Crown of England and the sapphire engagement ring that belonged to Princess Diana and Kate Middleton.
As the season gets cooler, these beautiful ombre sapphire and South Sea pearl earrings from Mikimoto are the perfect fall touch to any wardrobe. These earrings have a total of 1.49 carats of graduated sapphires, ranging from that vivid sapphire blue to white.

Scott King’s Personal Watch Feature: Roger Dubuis Much More Perpetual Calendar

Roger Dubuis Much More Perpetual Calendar Ref. M34 5739 5
While Scott attended FSU for college, his heart was always at home with the Miami Hurricanes, thus explaining his love for the color orange. I remember the day that my father received this special timepiece. We were at the watch fair in Geneva where he immediately fell in love with the Much More collection at an SIHH show. Upon being handed the watch, it was love at first sight. Scott couldn’t wait until after the show to get this watch, he needed instant gratification that day and managed to convince Carlos Dias, then owner and designer of Roger Dubuis, to let him leave with the watch on his wrist. This happened to be the year when Roger Dubuis launched the Follow Me collection which was simply revolutionary at the time and paid true homage to Swiss watchmaking.
That evening, we all joined the Roger Dubuis team for an elegant dinner in Geneva. During the course of dinner, my father asked Mr. Dias how he came up with the inspirations for all of his watch collections, to which he replied: “First, I created the Hommage to pay my respects to our Swiss heritage, then I gave people my Sympathie, next was Much More, then Too Much, and now they can all Follow Me.” Here are some additional details on Scott’s favorite Roger Dubuis watch:
