A fantastic first year of collaboration between Ferrari and Hublot is coming to an end. This has been highly successful, both commercially, with the two first Big Bangs in titanium and Magic Gold – the famous first ever scratch-resistant 18-carat gold invented by Hublot – and promotionally, with more than 130 events. This success is welcomed by Jean-Claude Biver, Chairman of Hublot, and Ricardo Guadalupe, the CEO of Hublot, and is already sparking ideas for new models. There are three which are already part of the Big Bang 45 mm family: The first is the aptly named Big Bang Ferrari “Red Magic Carbon”: It is the new symbol of the brand’s progress towards verticalization, with its case and its movement designed, developed, and produced entirely at the Hublot manufacture.
The UNICO movement is designed, developed, machined and assembled by the micro-mechanical engineers, engineers and watchmakers at Hublot. A practical flyback chronograph which can be reset at any time, and which is unique in the watchmaking industry, two push-buttons, with date indicator, and featuring a uniquely positioned mechanism with dual coupling and the famous “column wheel” visible on the dial side. Its development required a completely original approach and thinking outside the box: For example, the hour counter is driven directly by the barrel, and there is no jumper in the chronograph mechanism. This simplification boosts reliability and robustness. Its pallet fork and escapement wheel are fixed to a removable platform and are made from silicon, whose lightness provides a guarantee of performance. Its construction, which incorporates just 330 components, has been simplified as much as possible in order to further increase robustness. This result is the fruit of continual adjustments made since 2009, the year it was launched, which have been carried out jointly by the technical office, the laboratory and the after-sales service in the manufacture. Its frequency of 4hz/28,800 vibrations per hour and its immaculate finish are also a guarantee of high chronometric quality. Finally, its automated production, which includes automation of the machining, stone fitting, oiling and numerous assembly operations also ensures consistent, controlled quality. Its power reserve is around 72 hours.
Hublot Big Bang Ferrari King Gold Carbon Watch
Its carbon fiber case is also entirely designed, developed and manufactured by Hublot thanks to a team of specialists who joined the in-house team two years ago, and who understand all the production stages of its components perfectly. What sets it apart is the forging of all the carbon fiber components using the multi-layer principle: This involves the stacking of several sheets of carbon fiber (up to twelve for the thickest component), pressed into molds and placed in polymerization ovens. The advantage of this principle: No bubbles, therefore providing the material with excellent homogeneity as well as higher mechanical strength. The in-house machining is done on specially adapted machines with five spindles. Each component of the case and the movement is subjected to continual checks throughout the manufacturing process. For example, the water resistance of each timepiece is inspected three times during its assembly.

Finally, the mass of the red sapphire crystal for this model was colored directly by adding chemical components during the development of the material. Thanks to this process, the color is unalterable. Cartier is debuting another exciting piece this month in Geneva during the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), a new Ballon Bleu Tourbillon. This watch has very distinctive features such as the minute hand in the center with dual jump-hour counters. The second time zone indicator is advanced by the pusher at 10 o’clock. Although this combination is unusual the execution of the craft is a definite work of art. This new Ballon Bleu Tourbillon is housed in a substantial 46mm white gold or rose gold case and while the case seems to be an ample size, this watch still maintains rather slim aesthetics with the case being only 13.8mm wide. Inside the watch you will find that Cartier has utilized the Cartier Caliber MC9456 with added jump hour module and the Geneva Seal. This movement without the jump hour module is already found in current high-end Cartier pieces. This new Ballon Bleu Tourbillon is limited to 50 pieces in either white gold or rose gold with each timepiece stamped with its own number. The retail price is expected to be between $100,000 and $150,000.

Cartier has announced the return of one of its most unmistakable designs, the Cartier Crash watch. Looking like something straight out of a Salvador Dali painting, this watch made its first debut in 1967 at Cartier in London. This year at SIHH the Crash watch will finally be released with a tear-drop link bracelet, either in solid gold or pave set with diamonds. The unusual 38.5mm x 25.5 mm case will be made of either 18 karat rose or white gold and will feature a pave diamond bezel. It is said that the design of the Crash watch came about when the vice president Jean-Jacques Cartier of Cartier London was in a serious car crash. If there’s one thing Roger Dubuis knows how to do, it’s making a dazzling women’s watch. This year for SIHH Roger Dubuis created a memorable and distinctly feminine watch that will be part of their Excalibur collection. In time for the SIHH, IWC has introduced the 2013 Ingenieur Automatic Watch (Ref 3239). This watch is one of their more conservative watches of their 2013 collection and pays homage to the original Gerald Genta design. The new Ingenieur Automatic features design aesthetics created by the legendary watch designer such as the bores in the bezel, which originally was implemented to hold the bezel firmly in position.
The Ingenieur collection first launched in 1955 and since then houses its automatic movement in a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. It was also one of the first Swiss manufacturers to create the bidirectional automatic movement. These features such as the bores and the logo with stylized lightning bolt eventually became the hallmark of the Ingenieur collection. This new 2013 Ingenieur Automatic is powered by the automatic mechanical IWC 30110 caliber and is beautifully encased in a 40mm steel case. This watch is also great for slimmer wrists with only a watch case width of 10mm. Much like all its predecessors the 2013 Ingenieur also encases a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields up to 40,000 amperes per meter which is more than 8 times the Swiss standard.
