Memoris: The Chronograph-Watch by Louis Moinet

We’ve mentioned in the past that innovative watch brand Louis Moinet proudly claims their namesake created the world’s first chronograph (the “compteur de tierces”) in 1816. Fast forward 200 years, and the brand is looking to once again revolutionize the watch industry.
“It’s probably the most important launch we’ve ever done” Jean-Marie Schaller, CEO of Louis Moinet, says of their latest creation- Memoris. Historically, watchmakers have referred to a chronograph function as a complication- a cool addition to your standard time-telling accessory, but not it’s main function.
The talented designers at Louis Moinet decided to take a different approach. Rather than working to improve the chronograph complication, they decided to step back and try to create something totally different. Thus, the “chronograph-watch” known as the Memoirs was born.

The first thing that you’re likely to notice when viewing the Memoirs is that every single aspect of the chronograph function is on display- and further, that it takes center stage. The hours and minutes indicator is featured (in a way that almost makes it look like a complication added on for effect) via a small subdial. Any of the traditional workings of an automatic mechanism are, in this case, hidden beneath a plate at the back of the movement. Make no mistake, this timepiece is all about the chronograph!
The revolutionary Memoris 46mm watch will be available in 18K pink gold or 18K white gold, in three limited editions of just 60 units each.

TAG Heuer Enters the Smartwatch Race

It seems like every day a new Swiss watch brand is unveiling some version of a smartwatch. Montblanc started by releasing a smart strap with a LED screen, then Frederique Constant and Alpina revealed timepieces that synced with iPhone and Android apps to track daily activity and sleep habits- and now even more of the big names in Swiss Watchmaking have joined the race to see who can create the best Swiss-Smartwatch.
New reports from Baselworld 2015 in Switzerland confirm that TAG Heuer should be releasing a “Swiss Android smartwatch” by the end of this year. The timepiece will be powered by Google’s Android Wear software and an Intel chip. Reports confirm the watch will include the wearable-tech features we’ve all come to love, including GPS and a heart rate monitor.

As we’ve mentioned before, the big fear in the Swiss timepiece industry was that smartwatches by tech brands like Apple would make traditional watches a thing of the past. Luckily for the luxury timepiece industry, Apple’s smartwatch reveal was met with much criticism. Their watch, which is available in multiple variations, can cost as much as $10,000- a big chunk of change for a piece of technology which will likely be outdated within two years. Aesthetically, the Apple Watch isn’t very pleasing either. It’s been likened to wearing a computer monitor on your wrist- not very stylish!
TAG Heuer has decided to answer Apple’s unspoken challenge with one of their own: TAG aims to create a watch that’s technologically advanced, with roots in quality Swiss timekeeping (they’ve been in the business of luxury watchmaking for well over 100 years,) and is a stylish accessory that people enjoy wearing. Rumor has it, the brand is using a version of their greatly-loved Carrera model for the upcoming smartwatch.

However, it’s undeniable that the Apple Watch has put the concept of wearing a watch firmly at the forefront of young people’s minds. This is a definite turnaround for a generation that previously had abandoned watches in favor of digital displays on cellphones. For this, TAG CEO Jean-Claude Biver is grateful. “Apple will get young people used to wearing a watch and later maybe they will want to buy themselves a real watch.”

Many members of the King family have recently traveled to Basel, Switzerland to preview all of the new, highly anticipated 2015 Swiss timepieces at Baselworld. Only one day into the trip, and the Kings have already seen some fantastic new timepieces from the most prestigious brands in the industry.
Zenith is arguably a personal favorite brand of King Jewelers CFO Jono King, who says “I’m a big fan of Zenith; their pilot collection is a great entry point for aspiring watch collectors. Zenith showed off two new models in four different variations at Basel this year- the El Primero Sport (available on rubber strap, steel bracelet, or leather strap) and the Elite 6150 model.

The variations are clearly discernible from each other- one is clearly sporty with a black rubber strap, one is clearly casual with a stainless steel link bracelet, and one is clearly dressy with a brown leather strap.

Zenith also premiered the Elite 6150 timepiece, equipped with a brand new manufacture movement: the Elite 6150 calibre. Pantone Color Picks for Spring 2015

The long-awaited Pantone color picks for 2015 have been released and we have to say, we’re thrilled with the 10 leading colors for Spring/Summer 2015. Softer hues will steal the spotlight this year, with vibrant shades being used predominantly as accent pieces.
The 10 Spring/Summer Colors for 2015 are Aquamarine, Scuba Blue, Lucite Green, Classic Blue, Toasted Almond, Strawberry Ice, Tangerine, Custard, Marsala, and Glacier Gray. While all the hues are beautiful in their own right, we’ve chosen our top 3 favorites to focus on a little more closely in the coming months.

1. Marsala (The Pantone Color of the Year)

The Pantone color of the year is a beautiful red, which brings to mind the wine that gave it it’s name. With red-brown undertones, it’s the perfect color to add a base of warmth to your springtime nuptials. Luckily, red is always en vogue, and even though the color is trendy, it definitely won’t make you cringe when looking back at your wedding pictures years later. Even if you’re not tying the knot, incorporate Marsala into your style by taking inspiration from gorgeous celebs like Miranda Kerr, Blake Lively, and Kaley Cuoco who have all rocked Marsala colored gowns on the red carpet.

2. Strawberry Ice

This Pantone spring-y pink is a personal favorite of ours. How many brides have you seen try to “think pink” on their big day and end up making it look like something straight out of a children’s princess story? Too many to count. The major bonus to Strawberry Ice is that it allows you to tastefully add the feminine pink to your nuptials without overpowering every other color in your pallet. It’s slightly brighter than the shades of Blush and Dusty Rose that were popular in the fall, adding a bit of much needed vivacity to your spring ceremony. This is where the ever-popular Pink Peony bouquet will truly shine! If Strawberry Ice isn’t the color you want to spice up your wedding with, try instead to incorporate it into your daily fashion by utilizing it as a nail color or lipstick. Similar to Mint, Lucite Green is the perfect color to add a touch of vintage flair to your spring wedding. Table accents like vases, napkins, or charger plates are small, sweet touches which can go a long way. Louis Moinet Covers Watch Journal

This March, Louis Moinet graces the cover of Watch Journal’s Explorer Issue. King Jewelers is proud to be South Florida’s authorized Louis Moinet retailer!
Louis Moinet truly left his mark on the watch scene in 1816 when he invented the world’s first chronograph (although he called it a “compteur de tierces.”) After such an impressive accomplishment, Moinet became friends and roommates with renowned watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet (creator of another prestigious brand which is shown on the back cover of this same magazine.)
Louis Moinet has consistently been at the forefront of timepiece innovation, and in keeping with that trend, created the 20-Second Retrograde that is shown on the cover. The intricate design features 260 parts and a multitude of small, eye-catching details. The small hour and minute dial is white with blued-steel dewdrop hands. The rest of the dial is open, allowing you to see the movement in action. Features include a 20 second retrograde function (displayed via the blued-steel central hand) and a maximum 48-hour power reserve when fully wound.
