This week on Collector’s Corner, we’re discussing an exciting new limited edition timepiece that just arrived in our Nashville salon: the IWC Aquatimer Chronograph Edition La Cumbre Volcano. We love all of IWC’s limited edition Aquatimers (anyone remember the Galapagos Islands edition?) because they invoke the feeling of excitement surrounding adventurous expeditions into the unknown. The La Cumbre Volcano edition, we’re happy to report, doesn’t disappoint in the slightest.
For seven years now, IWC has worked closely with the Charles Darwin Foundation to perserve the fragile ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands. You may remember that Darwin’s best-known contributions to the scientific community followed evolution of finches in the Galapagos. Since their partnership with the Charles Darwin Foundation began back in 2009, IWC has dedicated special Aquatimer editions to the islands and the latest addition to the collection is no exception. The La Cumbre Volcano moniker refers to the La Cumbre volcano on the island of Fernandina in the Galapagos.

The Aquatimer Chronograph Edition La Cumbre Volcano features a mechanical chronograph movement contained within a 44mm rubber coated stainless steel case. The mechanical internal/external rotating bezel features the SafeDive system is luminescent, for ease of use while diving in deep water. Features include a 68-hour power reserve when fully wound, date display at the 3 o’clock position, stopwatch function with minutes and seconds, flyback function, and small hacking seconds. It is covered by convex, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The watch, designed for exploring the ocean deep, is water-resistant to 30 bar, or approximately 300m. This limited edition Aquatimer is limited to just 500 pieces world-wide.

Today we’re focusing on a very special new arrival! Our Nashville salon just received a beautiful, GIA certified, natural light pink oval diamond proposal-ready engagement ring that is sure to turn some heads! Pink diamonds are sought after due to their rarity and beautiful range of intensity in color. As with all fancy colored diamonds, the more intense the color, the more rare (and therefore more expensive) the stone is.
This 18K white gold engagement ring features a 1.50ct, GIA certified, natural light pink SI2 oval modified brilliant cut diamond center stone set in 18K rose gold. It is surrounded by a halo of round white diamonds. The center stone is flanked by two half moon white diamonds, one on each side, and each half moon is encircled by a round diamond halo. The shank is pave set with multiple rows of round diamonds, with additional round diamonds decorating the basket. This stunning engagement ring has a total pink diamond weight of 1.50ct, and a total white diamond weight of 1.77ct, for a total combined diamond weight of 3.27ct. Collector’s Corner: Bell & Ross Reveals New BR-X1 Hyperstellar

Much to the delight of us all, Bell & Ross has unveiled a new BR-X1 chronograph, the BR-X1 Hyperstellar, which pays homage to man’s fascination with the beauty and mystery of outer space. This timepiece is a limited edition (only 250 will be released world-wide) so if you’re a Bell & Ross enthusiast and you’re lucky enough to find an authorized retailer that still has the BR-X1 Hyperstellar available, we’d suggest you jump on it!
The BR-X1 Hyperstellar has a BR-CAL.313 automatic mechanical movement contained within a 45mm titanium case with anodized blue aluminum and rubber inserts. The metal skeleton dial has luminescent indexes and hour and minute hands, while still allowing you to see right into the heart of the movement. Features include hour and minutes function, small seconds indicator at the 3 o’clock position, skeleton date window at the 6 o’clock position, and a chronograph function.

The chronograph features a 30-minute timer at the 9 o’clock position and central chronograph seconds. The scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is grey-tinted to match the overall cool tones of the timepiece. The caseback is also covered by tinted sapphire crystal which is centered on the balance. The strap is a combination of grey alligator leather and grey rubber with a steel and grey rubber pin buckle.

The Color-Changing Chameleon Diamond

With fine quality diamonds, rarity equates to value. With diamonds in the normal range, value is based on the absence of color, because colorless diamonds are the rarest. With fancy color diamonds— stones outside the normal color range as determined by GIA—the rarest and most valuable colors are saturated pinks, blues, and greens. In all cases of fancy colored diamonds, even minor color differences can have a big impact on value. One of the most fascinating and exotic diamonds has to be the Chameleon Diamond, a rare and color-changing diamond that normally appears to be green yet can morph to a range of shades of the spectrum from brown to yellow.
As rare as they are, chameleon diamonds are particularly awe-inspiring because of certain qualities that no other stones possess. At the core of those characteristics is a unique power: the ability to change color. These diamonds actually adapt to their environment and temporarily switch colors, switch hues. It’s important to note that not all chameleons go from a darker hue to a light one – some shift colors in the reverse, from yellow to green.
So what actually causes this change in diamond color? While researchers are unable to thoroughly explain these color-changing behaviors, which are known as thermochromism (a switch in response to heat) and a photochromism (a switch in response to light), these diamonds all contain unusually high concentrations of hydrogen, as well as traces of nickel and nitrogen, in their crystal structure. This nitrogen-hydrogen complex could be responsible for the chameleon effect.
What makes these stones so fascinating is not only their color-changing capability, but also the fact that very little has been written about them. For these reasons, chameleon diamonds remain an intriguing phenomenon and a highly sought-after addition to any connoisseurs or investor’s collection. To date, the largest documented stone of this kind is a 31.32-carat oval-cut chameleon diamond known as the Chopard Chameleon Diamond.

Minions Take Over KJ5 Jewelry Creation at King Jewelers

With all the summer weddings, our custom design workshop has been extremely busy manufacturing unique diamond rings for all of our brides-to-be. I was beginning to think that we could use some extra help. So when I walked into the Nashville store this morning I was shocked and in awe of the newest team of craftsman who joined our skilled master jewelers while I was away… minions.

Loyal, diligent, and adorable, I was so excited by the addition of the Minion jewelry crew to assist in manufacturing the KJ5 ring collections. These little yellow helpers work around the clock and only use responsibly sourced diamonds that are conflict free with ideal cuts. While they get into some trouble around the workshop, they make up for it with their exceptional diamond jewelry creations. The secret is to keep them well fed with fresh bananas and away from the laser machines.
It was an easy decision to make Kevin in charge of the Minion workshop. King Bob was assigned the title of chief diamond setter and Stewart was put in charge of quality control… and the coffee bar to make sure that he stays awake. There’s so much commotion back there in an organized chaos which is the only way my family really likes it. Some Minions stay busy setting diamonds, others carve rings out of wax and cast precious metals. A few little guys even picked up polishing and electroplating using rhodium. Their quality control and attention to detail is simply first-class.

To say the least, our family is proud to have a group of talented and lovable Minions as part of our crazy crew. We love to have fun at King Jewelers and really enjoy making memorable experiences for our brides and grooms.
