Top 6 Engagement Rings Trends

An engagement ring is a precious symbol of eternal love and commitment. It will rest on her finger to serve as a constant reminder of the love you two will share for the rest of your lives. Picking out the perfect engagement ring can be an overwhelming experience. That’s why we’ve come up with a list of the top 6 engagement ring trends that have been highly-coveted this past year. Each style reveals unique qualities that showcase distinctive personalities and aesthetics. King Jewelers understands that having a one-of-a-kind ring is important and we’re here to help you every step of the way.

Fancy-Shaped Diamonds

Pear Shaped Halo Engagement Ring

Fancy-shaped diamonds have become highly sought after this year. We have seen a long line of marriage proposals with the classic brilliant rounds and cushion-cut diamonds. However, more recently we have seen several brides swooning over classic solitaires with larger pear-shaped and marquise-shaped center stones. Much like the oval diamond, pear and marquise stones give the illusion of elongating the fingers. These modern shapes look stunning when set as a solitaire, framed by a halo, or accompanied by side stones. Therefore, you can create the ring that best fits your personality.

Large Solitaires

Solitaire Round Brilliant Diamond Engagement Ring
Recently, larger center stones in a solitaire setting have been more popular among modern brides. Solitaire rings bestow a classic elegance to the finger. The simplicity of a high-polished band leading up to a large center stone radiates a traditional sophistication. Solitaire engagement rings look iconic with a variety of different shaped diamonds or gemstones. A round brilliant diamond keeps the look conservative while switching to a fancy shape gives the ring an eccentric flair.  This style serves as a signature way to eliminate details in order to show off a gorgeous, ideal-cut diamond on full display.

Yellow Gold is Back

Yellow Gold Diamond Engagement Rings with Split Shank
Another recent trend in the bridal world is yellow gold engagement rings. It’s time to move away from all the cool-toned white gold rings and welcome something a bit warmer. For the past 15 years, yellow gold was labeled as an “out-dated” metal color. Although, this past year has proven quite the opposite. Yellow gold engagement rings are becoming more prominent int he bridal world. Something about the contrast between a warm, high-polished gold band against a luminous white diamond is merely breathtaking.

Alternative Engagement Rings

Floral Engagement Rings

The next engagement ring trend that we have discovered this year is the alternative style ring. This can mean a myriad of different things. For instance, alternative stones, such as blue sapphire and morganite add a unique pop of color to an otherwise traditional ring. On the other hand, delicate, floral-inspired rings, featuring fluid lines that lead to a contemporary-set center stone are breathtakingly beautiful as well. Adding a modern twist to a classic style ring creates a nostalgic, yet unique work of art that will last a lifetime.

Vintage Style Rings

Vintage style engagement rings engraved by hand have also been in higher demand in recent months. Bead-edge milgrain and other intricate designs serve as the framework of these art deco-inspired masterpieces. Small diamond details encompass an extravagant center stone to make up an eye-catching ring that reminds us of the regal aesthetic commonly seen during the roaring twenties. Each vintage style engagement ring is as exceptional as it is nostalgic. Oftentimes our master jewelers can craft these custom rings by hand to perfectly fit your personal style.

East-West Engagement Ring Settings

East West Diamond Engagement Ring with a Halo
Finally, the most recent bridal trend that we’ve discovered is the east-west style ring. The east-west engagement ring takes an otherwise classic setting and places the center stone horizontally rather than vertically. This contemporary twist on traditional diamond rings immediately elongates the fingers and makes the stone appear larger. Commonly seen with emerald cuts, ovals, and marquise-shaped diamonds, this design is incredibly versatile. This engagement ring trend bestows you the freedom to create a ring that is distinctive to your style and individuality.

One way that you could catch her of guard is taking her to a Predator’s game. She’ll think you’re just taking her on a fun date night, but really, you’re about to change her life forever. David King Assesses the Top Bridal Trends of 2015

This Sylvie semi-mount engagement ring is meant to hold an east-west oval diamond center stone.

1. Ovals Aren’t Just for Race Car Drivers

Every motor enthusiast can tell you about their love for an oval track and screaming engines full of adrenaline, but brides might be the biggest fans of ovals these days as recent sales and demand have overwhelmed the bridal diamond industry. Fancy-shape diamonds have trended into popular favor over the last few years as brides seek unique styles and a bigger overall look for their budgets. For quite some time brides have gravitated towards elongated cushions, radiants, and emerald-cuts, which are still in high demand, yet we’ve seen a shift towards the oval diamond as the hottest trending diamond shape.
So why the sudden interest in oval diamonds? In our opinion it has to do with the tremendous amount of face-up, surface area and their beautiful curves. Imagine taking a round diamond and stretching it to the elongated size that you really desire. Some brilliance is sacrificed when compared to a round diamond, but it still has the feel of the round curves with the added bonus of a much greater surface area. A one-carat oval diamond can visually appear 20% larger then a one-carat round diamond while still costing 20% less just because of the shape. Round diamonds are the most expensive diamond cut and they consistently have the highest demand, as nearly 85% of engagement rings feature a round stone.
The KING Verdict: We still love our exotic cars but we really love fancy-shape oval diamonds!!! And if you’re up for something different, consider setting an oval sideways, or as we call it “east-west,” for a truly unique bridal style.

This Norman Silverman complete engagement ring features a cushion cut center diamond and is one of our most popular double-halo styles

2. Double Trouble All Around

No, this is not a cheesy spin on a bubble gum commercial. Instead, we’re focusing on the growing popularity of the double-halo engagement ring. While the single-halo trend revolutionized the diamond bridal industry over the last ten years, the double-halo style started appearing in designer collections and leading bridal magazines just a few years ago. Since that time, it has evolved with the popularity of diamond halo jewelry overall.
As the halo style grew in favor with brides over the years, the price of diamonds increased dramatically. This ultimately led to the birth of the double-halo as couples, based on their determined budget and desired look, faced the dilemma of either purchasing a larger diamond of lesser quality or a smaller diamond with better specifications. For brides that desired a finer diamond and a larger look at a price they could afford, the double-halo became a natural and brilliant solution. Today, double halo engagement rings are available in a range of styles, from modern to vintage, which complement either round or fancy-shape diamonds, regardless of size.
The KING Verdict: Two thumbs up for the double halo!! This trending style has allowed shoppers to focus more on diamond quality and cut, instead of just the size. The result has been a multitude of happy brides with whiter and brighter center diamonds, which look huge and are also affordable. Pro-Tip: try on a platinum engagement ring with a rose gold double halo set with diamonds. The two-tone coloring will really set your ring apart and the contrast between the halo and the shank will look beautiful.

3. Winter Roses Continue to Bloom

It may be getting a bit chillier outside as we prepare for our holiday festivities, but the warmth of rose gold continues to keep our brides cozy and obsessed. From Pinterest to the Knot, bridal media has focused heavily on rose gold jewelry designs over the last two years, resulting in a greater demand from brides and a plethora of new styles to choose from today. The rose color hue is still trending across our industry and it’s only getting hotter as time goes by. Rose gold seems to have overtaken yellow gold in the bridal world and we don’t see that trend ending anytime soon. From leading Swiss watch brands like Rolex and Cartier, to jewelry designers such as Roberto Coin and Mikimoto, we continue to see the growth and popularity of rose gold spread across all fashion types including designer handbags and shoes.
The KING Verdict: Traditionally we prefer the whiteness of platinum or white gold for colorless diamonds as it makes them shine the brightest, but rose gold has really grown on us over the years. Keep in mind that the rose color will cast a pinkish hue into the center diamond, so you might consider setting the center diamond into a white metal basket within the rose gold mounting to keep your diamond shining brightly.

Precision_Set_split_shank_Bridal_Trend
This Precision Set engagement ring features a diamond set triple split shank for added drama

4. The Split is a Hit

We have always loved a great banana split, admired a fancy dance split, and desperately prayed for a Kanye-Kim split, but all the recent hype revolves around brides who are falling in love with split-shank diamond engagement rings. By definition, a split shank ring is where the upper portion of the band (also known as a shank) splits into two or three separate bands that help support larger center stones. Bridal designers have lovingly and creatively embraced the split design into a diverse offering of beautiful engagement rings. Most split-shank rings are modern and brilliant in style, providing an elegant appearance with an open depth. They’re perfect for the popular (yet delicate) micropave rings that brides really love.
The KING Verdict: LOVE! A well designed split-shank ring can be gorgeous if done subtly with the proper proportions. We particularly love split-shank engagement rings with elongated fancy-shape diamonds such as ovals and cushions, round diamonds larger than 1.50 carats, or with 1 carat or larger diamonds set in a double-halo mounting.

Forevermark_Ever_Us_Two_Stone_Bridal_Trend
Forevermark’s Ever Us(TM) engagement ring is leading the new two-stone engagement ring trend

5. It Still Takes Two to Tango

This engagement season, several leading diamond brands and bridal designers launched a new diamond engagement ring concept with unique two-stone diamond ring collections. News of the two diamond campaign has dominated recent media with Forevermark, a subsidiary of the DeBeers Group, leading the way with the release of the Ever Us(TM) Two-Stone Diamond Ring. Through an aggressive national television campaign augmented with print and digital media advertisements, Forevermark communicates the message behind this trending new style: “One diamond for your best friend. One diamond for your true love.” While two-stone rings and jewelry predominately feature round brilliant-cut diamonds set in a bypass style, designs are also available with different stone arrangements in a range of sizes and metal colors.
The KING Verdict: While we’re still not sold on this new engagement ring concept, we’ll ultimately let the future brides be the final judge.

5 To-Do's Before the I Do's

5 Jewelry To-Do’s Before Your Wedding Day

Make sure you check these five important to-do’s off your list before saying “I Do” on the big day!

1. Engagement Ring

Tacori Crescent Brilliant Round Diamond & Milgrain Engagement Ring, including center diamond, $3,995
Tacori Crescent Brilliant Round Diamond & Milgrain Engagement Ring, including center diamond, $3,995

Your engagement ring is going to be one of the most precious pieces in your jewelry box- make sure you take care of it! Before your wedding day, make sure your ring is cleaned and polished. Depending on the duration of your engagement, it may need to be re-rhodium plated to get rid of any yellowing. While your ring is being cleaned, ask that the jewelers also check your stones- nothing would ruin your big day more than losing your big diamond in the midst of all the fun! Most importantly, make sure your insurance company has received a copy of the appraisal and that it’s been added to your insurance. Do this in advance- it would not be wise to take your engagement ring on an exotic honeymoon vacation without proper protection against theft!

2. Wedding Bands

King Jewelers 18K Rose Gold Diamond Milgrain Eternity Band, $2,400

A few months before your wedding day, the two of you should return to your local jeweler and search for wedding bands. Look for a jeweler with a large selection of both men’s and ladies bands so that both of you have a better chance of finding The Right Ring! Try to find a wedding band that complements your engagement ring- many women prefer to have a band that will sit flush with their engagement ring to avoid pinching or unsightly gaps. Don’t make the mistake of waiting till the last minute to look for bands! Allow for special ordering time before the wedding- many stores will only carry samples of men’s wedding bands. Once a customer chooses his style, the store must order it in his specific size. This process can take a few weeks, especially if you’re ordering a brand that makes each ring from scratch as they’re ordered.

3. Wedding Day Jewelry

Mikimoto A1 Akoya Cultured Pearl Strand, $1,850

The jewelery you choose to wear on your wedding day is extremely important- these are things that will be shared in every photograph. Don’t choose pieces that cause you to cringe in 20 years- ‘You wore THAT on your wedding day?’ Think of the staples and then choose pieces that best suit your personality and your wedding style. Diamonds and pearls are always hugely popular timeless choices. More often, women have elected to wear family heirlooms on the big day. Using vintage jewelry like your mother’s pearls or your great grandmother’s best diamond bracelet will make your wedding even more special. Even if you’re using jewelry accessories as your “something borrowed,” utilize your local jewelers’ talents! Even if you’re not buying something, many jewelers will be happy to clean your jewelry and check to make sure any prongs or clasps are still in top condition.

4. Bride/Groom Gifts for the Wedding Day

Sydney Evan "Love" Necklace, $950
Sydney Evan “Love” Necklace, $950

Many couples choose to give each other special gifts the morning of their wedding day. Some of our favorite bride and groom gifts are not surprisingly jewelry. We’ve seen grooms give their brides key pendants (as a symbol of the key to their hearts,) infinity symbol bracelets (as a symbol of their eternal love,) or Mrs. themed jewelry. A fine Swiss timepiece is the perfect gift for the groom on your wedding day. This is the watch he’ll put on every morning that reminds him of the joy he felt on his wedding day. It’s what he’ll check to make sure he gets to every teacher’s conference, school play, and little league game on time. It’s an heirloom he can one day pass onto your child on their wedding day. Need a kleenex yet?

5. Bridal Party Gifts

Sterling Silver Bar Necklace, on sale for $60

They’ve been with you every step of the way through the wedding planning process, and now’s your opportunity to thank them. Many brides choose to give their bridal party a small piece of jewelry that they can wear on the wedding day that they will still enjoy wearing for years to come. Simple pendants or stud earrings are always popular choices that will be enjoyed by most women regardless of their personal styles. A bar pendant like the one shown above is affordable, and you can even have them engraved to add a more personal note to the gift.

Spring Flowers Bring Bridal Bliss

Since March is wedding-month here at King Jewelers, we decided to branch out (no pun intended) by switching our focus from diamonds to flora today!
There’s a reason so many women choose to get married in the spring- the weather is usually not too hot and not too cold, many family members are able to get time off to attend the wedding, and the most colorful flowers are all in bloom.
One of the most devastating things a bride can hear is that the flower she’s been dead set on having in her wedding is out of bloom during her date (think of the gorgeous pink peonies…. wilting in frigid December). Luckily for springtime brides, there’s no other time of year which will provide so many options.
Keep in mind that it’s better to set your mind on an overall color scheme or theme, rather than on a few specific types of flowers. Things happen- weather, pesticides, shipping problems- and if you’ll only accept one type of flower, any small hiccup can make your cost skyrocket! Give them a bit of leeway, and a good florist will keep you in budget and make sure you carry a breathtaking arrangement!

1. Peonies

They have always been well-liked, but Pink Peonies got a huge boost when they became an integral part of cultural phenomenons like Gossip Girl and Pinterest. The large blooms make an impact which is hard to ignore! Nowadays, a bouquet of pink peonies is in high-demand, and winter brides are paying through the nose to get them out of season. Luckily for our spring brides, May is the most affordable time of year to order these flowers. Pinterest-loving Spring Brides rejoice!

2. Orchids

Pricey, usually, but another favorite flower amongst brides everywhere. The wide variety of shades (white, two-tone, purple, pink, yellow, maroon…) make them useful in a variety of color schemes. Brides on a budget should investigate Dendrobium Orchids, which are just as beautiful, but tend to be more affordable.

3. Daisies

For the bride who really wants her bouquet to look fresh and bright, we recommend Gerbera Daises. These flowers come in a variety of colors, mesh beautifully with the ever-popular rose, and will add some volume to your bouquet with minimal cost. Affordable flowers that are also gorgeous? What more could you ask for?

4. Wildflowers

Nothing really beats an outdoor wedding in the springtime (unless you have allergies, obviously.) For the bohemian bride who wants to get in touch with nature, wildflowers are the obvious choice. The eclectic blend of blooms (which either your florist can create, or you can DIY by shopping at large flower marts) will make your bouquet unique and gorgeous from every angle.
Did we highlight your favorite springtime flower? Experiencing bouquet envy? Let us know!

How To Find Her Ring Size Without Asking

Secretly Learn Her Ring Size Without Ruining the Surprise

When you’re planning the perfect proposal, the last thing you want to do is blow it by asking her outright “What’s your ring size?” There’s nothing that will put her on alert faster than that simple question. Instead of ruining the surprise, try these helpful tips to figure out her ring size without asking her.

1. Ask Her Favorite Shopping Buddy

It’s likely that she has at least one friend who accompanies her on most of her shopping excursions. Friends who shop together tend to at least have a general idea about each others size and taste. This friend will prove indispensable to you! Your girlfriend’s shopping buddy will have a pretty good guess of her ring size. Added bonus- your girlfriend has probably also discussed engagement ring styles with this friend, meaning they can give you a head start as far as which color metal, cut stone, and style ring she’d love! Make sure you find someone trustworthy- you don’t want a Chatty Kathy to ruin the surprise!

2. Borrow a Ring That She Won’t Miss

If you can find a ring that your girlfriend wears infrequently, or at least, not often enough that she’d realize it was missing,  bring it to your jeweler to give them an idea of her ring size. Proceed with caution! It’s possible that A. the ring you choose may no longer fit her or B. that it’s made to fit a different finger. Even if you run into those two problems, this method is still very useful. If nothing else, you’ll at least be very close to the right size and can get it adjusted after you propose!

3. Ask Her Parents

This will of course alert her parents that you’re planning on popping the question, but it’s still a good way to figure out her ring size. Remember, her parents have been buying her gifts since she was born! If she’s particularly close to her mom, you should definitely approach your would-be-mother-in-law for advice. She’ll know what kind of engagement ring would make her daughter swoon, and mom’s always tend to have a good guess to our sizes!
We hope these tips will help you secretly discover your girlfriend’s ring size without asking her! Now that you know her size, shop our selection of engagement rings now!

Fall 2015 Wedding Dress Trends

Inspired by the 1970’s

Now that we’ve seen the best of Fall 2015 bridal collections, we’ve compiled a list of wedding dress trends to watch out for next fall. With inspiration clearly drawn from the sexy 70’s, prepare for a departure from all things traditional in 2015. Hint: the 70’s are back, with a vengeance!

1. How Low Can You Go? Plunging V-Necks

Forget about modesty next year – the one trend we see in almost every designer’s Fall 2015 line is deep V-necks down to there!

2. Feathers, Fur, and Fringe

Textures like feathers, fur, and fringe reigned supreme on the Fall 2015 runways in many different forms. We see many overcoats – be they full on leather fur lined jackets or light lace half coats. There is also an abundance of poofy feather-clad skirts and sleek fringe covered sheaths.

3. Peek-a-Boo! Crop Tops and Sexy Cutouts

Fall 2015 brides will probably be showing a lot of skin! Small sheer panels or gaping mid drifts are in. Crop tops were huge fashion staples in 2014, with stars like Taylor Swift managing to wear them in ways that were both chic and classy. It’s no surprise the trend has finally made it’s way to the wedding circuit. Thankfully, designers are offering a wide variety of styles so that any bride, no matter how conservative or how liberal, can comfortably wear a two piece gown.

4. Sleeves Stevie Nicks Would Be Proud Of

There’s no doubt that 2014 was the year of the lace long-sleeve wedding dress – due entirely, we believe, to residual wedding envy over Duchess Kate Middleton’s gorgeous gown. While long sleeves were still a prominent feature of dresses on the Fall 2015 runways, designers are seeking to change it up a bit. Look for sleeves with a more loose fit in flowing sheer fabrics like chiffon.

Spring 2015 Wedding Dress Trends for the Perfect Wedding

Romance Rules the Runways

1. Cool Pastel Hues – Beauty in Full Color

2014 was a year for pink dresses – fuchsia, blush, and everything in between – but if runways are any indication, 2015 will be more “Something Blue” than “Pretty in Pink.” Cool hues like blue, periwinkle, lavender, and mint appear in many designer’s collections.

2. Off the Shoulder Sleeves – Bare is Best!

Nothing is quite as romantic as a “come hither” style, off the shoulder sleeve. This style is particularly striking on bohemian brides seeking a relaxed look for an outdoorsy affair.

3. High Collared Necklines for the Classy Look

The high collar provides a welcome change from the traditional sweetheart neckline, and also adds a touch of refined elegance to any gown.

4. Princess Worthy Tulle Skirts

Spring 2015 designers seemed to have a motto of “Bigger is Better” when it comes to tulle skirts. Between full ballgowns and dramatic mermaid silhouettes, every bride can find the perfect gown to fit her inner princess.

Wedding Dress Styles & Trends for Summer 2014

Top 5 Summer Wedding Dress Trends

Summer is in full-swing here at King Jewelers and we’re dying to share our favorite wedding dress styles and trends for summer 2014.

1. Flowing Silhouettes

Summer wedding dress styles tend to be much more streamlined than winter dresses. While there were a few (gorgeous) dresses with full skirts, the majority of gowns were in the mermaid or a-line style. With so many beach weddings occurring this summer, it’s no wonder a more comfortable, casual shape has gained popularity. This beautiful Theia creation ups the glamor of a simple sheath wedding dress with head-to-toe sequins.

2. Dramatic Embellishment

Summer 2014 has brought us opulent gowns decorated in sequins, beading, and three-dimensional flowers. If the runways are any indication, extravagance will equal excellence in 2014 summer weddings.  We love loading up on bling, but this Rivini dress with a large amount of embellishment in a concentrated area was one of our favorites.

3. Emphasis on the Back

More and more emphasis is being placed on the back of the wedding dress as time goes on. Sheer panels, shimmering appliqué, romantic lace, or dramatic buttons- the possibilities are endless and stunning. This Pallas Couture sheath gown with sheer inserts, buttons up the back, and sculpted lace cap sleeves is equally gorgeous from the front and the back!

4. Short Skirts

With the summer heat wave in full force, it was inevitable that some brides would start gravitating towards gowns with shorter wedding dress hemlines. Designers answered the demand in their summer lines, showcasing everything from knee-length elegance to well-above-the-knee drama. This Monique Lhuillier creation offsets the short skirt with delicate lace half sleeves. Speaking of lace sleeves…

[Explore Top Engagement Ring Styles and Designs]

5. Lace Sleeves

Kate Middleton’s lace sleeved wedding gown started a trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Nearly every designer showcases lace sleeves on at least one dress in their Spring/Summer collections. The romantic look adds a hint of vintage flair to any gown, with the added bonus of not getting you too overheated in the summer months. We’re partial to this off-the-shoulder Berta Bridal creation with a dramatic button up back.
