Harry Winston Debuts New Avenue Classic Cherry Blossom Timepiece, Inspired by the Beauty of the Japanese Cherry Blossom, Ahead of Baselworld 2017

Harry Winston has set our hearts aflutter with their latest creation inspired by the natural beauty of the Japanese cherry blossom: the Avenue Classic Cherry Blossom.
The blooming of the sakura cherry blossom tree is a cherished cultural event in Japan. Every year, people gather at the base of cherry trees to hold hanami, or a flower-viewing festivals, when the beloved pink and white flowers bloom. The brief blooming of the cherry blossom flowers represent the coming of spring, or new beginnings, and also serve as a reminder of the short but precious time we each have on this earth.

The brand expertly utilizes the natural iridescence of the  pale green-blue mother-of-pearl dial to emulate soft clouds gently blowing across the sky. The focal point of the dial, however, are the 39 brilliant-cut white diamonds and 29 brilliant-cut pink sapphires, all of varying size, which are scattered across the dial along white gold “branches” and call to mind the tranquil beauty of the Japanese cherry blossom.

The case of the Avenue Classic Cherry Blossom was inspired by Harry Winston’s flagship store on 5th Avenue in New York. The art-deco styling serves as a stark, and yet also complementary, contrast to the more traditional influence of the dial. Tying it all together is a vibrant blue-green alligator strap which emphasizes the beautiful mother-of-pearl dial. This timepiece, which represents both an enchanting work of art and an exhibition of the excellent watchmaking which Harry Winston has become known for, leaves us anxious and excited to see what they’ll unveil at Baselworld 2017.

There are few things on this earth that are more infamous or more coveted than the Hope Diamond. In fact, the Hope Diamond has been labeled as the second-most visited piece of artwork after the Mona Lisa. This rare, exceptionally beautiful blue diamond weighing 45.52 carats also has a history rife with intrigue, theft, and misfortune to boot, only adding to its allure and leaving many to believe that the Hope Diamond is cursed. It doesn’t help matters that the diamond has a mysterious trait of after being exposed to ultraviolet light, the diamond will give off a faint red glow.

Many Believe the Hope Diamond is Cursed

Although the origins surrounding the Hope Diamond are somewhat foggy, it is generally believed that the Hope Diamond was originally mined from one of the first diamond mines in the world in the Golconda region of India. The gem was first mentioned in a report from French gem merchant Jean Baptiste Tavernier in the 17th century. Named initially as the Tavernier Blue, it was recorded as weighing 112 carats and Tavernier fails to mention how the gem was acquired or when.
Jean Baptiste Tavernier

In 1668 Tavernier proceeds to sell the diamond to King Louis XIV of France with 14 other larger diamonds. Five years later King Louis directs the court jeweler, Sieur Pitau, to re-cut the stone. The diamond is reduced to a little over 67 carats and is renamed the “Blue Diamond of the Crown” or the “French Blue” and worn mostly for ceremonial purposes.
The diamond remained in the French court until 1791, when after Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette tried to flee France during the beginning of the French Revolution, the jewels were turned over to the French Royal Treasury. In 1792 during a stint of looting, the French Blue diamond is stolen and disappears from history.

Word of the diamond does not appear again until 1812 when records appear that it is in the possession of Daniel Eliason, a London diamond merchant. It is believed that King George IV of England must have acquired the stone at some point and then later sold it in order to pay off his massive debts.
The next mention of the diamond is in a catalog entry in 1839 belonging to Henry Philip Hope. The diamond is now 45.52 carats and there is no mention of where it came from or how Hope acquired it. After Hope’s death in 1839, the diamond was passed through Hope’s family and sold multiple times before it was finally purchased in 1909 by Pierre Cartier.

In 1912, Evalyn Walsh McLean purchased the diamond from Cartier, who had by then reset the diamond as a pendant with a white diamond halo. Evalyn is probably the most notorious example of the fabled Hope Diamond curse. Her son was killed in a car crash, her daughter committed suicide, and her husband was committed to a mental institution.

After McLean’s death in 1947, Harry Winston purchased her jewelry collection, including the Hope Diamond. Harry Winston donated the diamond to the Smithsonian museum in 1958, but they still handle the diamond’s maintenance. In 2010 Harry Winston designed a new setting for the diamond known as “Embracing Hope.”

Whether cursed or not, the Hope Diamond continues to hold the captivation of the public eye as one of the most beautiful and intriguing objects to date.

Top 5 Tourbillon Watches

tourbillon cage
The tourbillon is one of the cherished complications of the watch-making world. Developed in the 18th century by Abraham-Louis Breguet, the tourbillon (meaning “whirlwind”) is a rotating framed within a watch that carries the balance and escapement. Breguet created the tourbillon as a means to make a watch movement more stable and accurate by counteracting the effects of gravity. Today, watch aficionados mostly appreciate the tourbillon for its complicated design and aesthetic appeal as they don’t make the movement more accurate. Do we need them? No, but we sure do love them.

1.) Harry Winston Histoire de Tourbillon

harry winston Histoire de Tourbillon
Presenting the tourbillon from the future! This very modern-looking watch has a case of 18 karat white gold and Zalium, a lightweight, thermal resistant, and durable alloy of zirconium and allium lily. What’s more is that Harry Winston has included not one, but two inclined single axis tourbillons with 36 second rotations to greatly reduce the gravitational effects on the regulator. Even with the complexity of this watch, the entire system only weighs 0.46 grams. Unfortunately this piece is limited to only 20 pieces.

2.) Breguet Tourbillon Messidor

Breguet Tourbillon Messidor Watch
That’s right. That Breguet. You can’t have a list of top tourbillons without mentioning one from the master himself. Abraham-Louis Breguet ‘s first tourbillon movement was developed for one of Napoleon’s carriage clocks.
The Messidor is one beautiful watch. The case is made of 18 karat rose gold with a coin edge and the dial and the case back are completely skeletonized in order to view the movement in its entirety. A nice touch is the gold hoop in the six o’clock position that puts the tourbillon right in the spotlight and gives it the appearance of floating in the case. The Messidor also boasts a 50 hour power reserve.

3.) IWC Portuguese Tourbillon Mystere Retrograde

IWC-Portuguese-Tourbillon-Mystere-Retrograde
This particular tourbillon from IWC stands out from the rest for one big reason. The Portuguese Tourbillon is the largest IWC-manufactured automatic wristwatch movement with a hefty seven day power reserve. Not many tourbillons have that big of a reserve, and IWC even has a reserve indicator on the black ruthenium dial. The flying tourbillon consists of 82 parts and it weighs only 0.635 grams.

4.) Breitling for Bentley Mulliner Tourbillon

breitling-for-bentley-mulliner-tourbillon-limited-edition-watch
Breitling wants to make a tourbilllon for you and only you. The Mulliner Tourbillon from Breitling for Bentley is an extraordinarily rare watch because 1) only two are made per year and 2) each watch is made specifically for the person buying it. The future owner of this watch has a range of options for the case material, dial color, and strap color as well as the wooden veneer on the case back, making sure that each watch is one of a kind. The watch case houses a 30 second COSC certified chronograph movement with a 42 hour power reserve and a tourbillon cage in the six o’clock position.

5.) Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Reserve Tourbillon

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Reserve Tourbillon
This is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s frist Master Control with an integrated tourbillon. The tourbillon itself sits in a T5 titanium cage weighing 0.28 grams which oscillates eight times per second. The beauty of the watch speaks for itself looking at its rose gold case, silvered dial, and the blue arms of the tourbillon. The Master Reserve also goes under a rigorous 1000 hours of testing to ensure its reliability and accuracy.

All About Fancy Colored Diamonds

If you’ve done your research when it comes to diamond buying, then you’ll know all about the 4 C’s – color, clarity, cut, and carat. All of these factor into a diamond’s quality and value and most brides-to-be are in pursuit of the notoriously rare, totally colorless diamond. However, of the four C’s color is probably the most flexible of all the diamond attributes.
If you’ve got a taste for the unique, then color diamonds are the choice for you. The colorless diamonds are the most famous, but diamonds can come in a whole range of colors that are equally striking. Known as “fancy” colored, these diamonds contain impurities that give them their color and possess an allure all of their own. Just ask Carrie Underwood, Kristen Bell, or Heidi Klum who all sport fancy colored diamond engagement rings. In order of rarity the yellow diamond is the most common, followed by brown, colorless, blue, green, black, pink, orange, purple, and red. For every 10,000 diamond mined in the world, only one can be called a fancy colored diamond.

Yellow & Brown Diamonds

Nitrogen is the most common impurity found in diamonds and is responsible for giving yellow and brown diamonds their hue. Close to 98% of diamonds will have some degree of nitrogen in them. The added benefit of using a yellow diamond for an engagement ring, is that the yellow color of the diamond can be enhanced by using a yellow gold mounting. Most yellow diamonds come from South Africa. Living up to its name, the Incomparable Diamond is the largest yellow diamond at 407.8 carats.

Orange Diamonds

Orange diamonds also get their color from the notorious Nitrogen. The structure of the carbon lattice is what turns the diamond orange rather than yellow. Orange diamonds are the only diamond in which synthetically enhancing the color can add to the value of the diamond. The Pumpkin Diamond is the most famous orange diamond at 5.1 carats and is currently owned by Harry Winston.

Red Diamonds

Moussaieff diamond
The rarest of all colored diamonds, the red diamond can be worth as much as $1,000,000 per carat. Nitrogen and extreme pressure during development give these diamonds a red cast and so far they’ve only been mined in Australia. Due to the rarity, it is estimated that in all likelihood only 50 red diamonds are left. One of the coveted red diamonds is the 5.1 carat Moussaieff diamond.

Green Diamonds

dresden green diamond
Anyone thinking of Kryptonite? Well, you’re not far off base as green diamonds actually get their color from being exposed to natural radiation, like from uranium ore, while developing. The color of a green diamond can change depending on how it has been cut or if it’s exposed to heat. The most famous green diamond is the Dreseden Green Diamond, at 41 carats.

Blue Diamonds

hope diamond
Blue diamonds get their color from trace amounts of Boron and most of them are mined in Australia and South Africa. With the presence of Boron, some of these diamonds can even conduct electricity. The Hope Diamond is naturally the most famous example of a blue diamond to date.

Pink Diamonds

Darya-e_Noor_Diamond_of_Iran
Next to yellow diamonds, pink diamonds are easily one of the most popular colored diamonds for engagement rings. They’re not as common as yellow diamonds, but are still accessible and affordable. Pink diamonds are mined in Brazil, Australia, and South Africa. The Darya e Noor is the largest pink diamond in the world at 186 carats and belongs to the Iranian Treasury.

Black Diamonds

Black diamonds are not truly black. It’s due to a high presence of dark inclusions that give them their black appearance and they are currently only found in Brazil and Africa. One of the more famous black diamonds is the Black Orlov, a 67.5 carat cushion-cut, that is said to be cursed.

May Birthstone Spotlight: Emerald

As sad as we are to see our Forevermark Diamond Week come to an end, we’re always glad to showcase other gemstones as well. And how can anyone be sad about emeralds? They have such a bright, vibrant color that is perfect for this time of year. Emeralds are prized for these vivid shades of green and are one of the hardest gemstones to find in flawless condition due to their soft nature, susceptibility to fracturing, and high number of inclusions. Along with an extensive history of being associated with good health, wealth, luck, and emotional well-being, emeralds have have been a popular gemstone from the time they were sold in Babylonian markets in 4000 B.C. and beyond.
teodora emeraldWith this gemstone’s fragile nature, it’s extraordinary to find any large gem-quality emerald. The world’s largest cut emerald is known as the Teodora, or Gift of God, a 57,500 carat opaque emerald roughly the size of a watermelon. One of the other largest emeralds is the Moghul Emerald, which is 217.18 carats carved on the front and the back with a Shi’a Muslim prayer invocation. The largest emerald in North America came out from a little farm in North Carolina, and is dubbed the Carolina Emperor at 65 carats.
Naturally the heavy-hitters of the jewelry world have also left their mark with emerald masterpieces. Harry Winston is responsible for cutting and setting the famous Colombian Chalk Emerald. The Chalk Emerald is a 37.82 carat square gemstone set as a ring and framed by fifteen carats of pear-cut diamonds. The Chalk Emerald was originally set into a necklace that belonged to a maharani in India.
chalk emerald
Cartier created a beautiful Art Deco emerald and platinum necklace in 1931 that features a 167.97 carat oval-cut Colombian emerald named the Mackay Emerald. This necklace also incorporated 35 smaller emeralds and as many as 2191 diamonds. This emerald was named after the owner, Anna Case Mackay.

anna_case_mackaymackay emerald

Because emeralds were so popular in the early 1920’s and 1930’s, one of our favorite Art Deco pieces is this Columbian emerald ring from our estate collection. The oval-cut emerald cabochon is framed by a swirling border of baguette and marquise cut diamonds. So no matter what your taste, an emerald is a way to tap into the elegant, the regal, and the timeless.

Our Top Five Famous Diamonds

What’s not to love about diamonds? The sparkle, the history, the romance . . . the diamond remains one of the most enduring family treasures of all time. But while most people would be satisfied with a good quality one carat diamond, what about the rest? Those individuals who hunger for the big, the bold, the infamous? Well, we’ve got the list just for you! Here are our top five famous diamonds whose weight in the jewelry world relies not only on carat size but notoriety as well. These diamonds are not for the faint of heart.

1) The Cullinan Diamond

cullinan diamond
The Cullinan Diamond is the proud title-holder for the world’s largest gem quality diamond ever discovered. Coming in at a whopping 3106.75 carats, this diamond was discovered in South Africa in 1905 by Thomas Evan Powell. The diamond was split up into nine smaller major diamonds, the largest is known as the Cullinan I, aka The Star of Africa. This 545.67 carat pear-cut beauty with 76 facets is truly the king of diamonds, and more notably the diamond of kings. The Cullinan I now sits comfortably in Sovereign’s Scepter in the British Crown Jewels. The Cullinan can also be removed from the scepter and worn as a rather hefty brooch.

2) The Golden Jubilee Diamond

golden jubilee diamond
The Golden Jubilee rolls into our line-up next as the world’s largest faceted diamond at 755.5 carats. Also discovered in South Africa in 1985, the Golden Jubilee Diamond had a rather unfortunate beginning as an undesirable find due to its brown color. In fact, it went by the name of “Unnamed Brown” and it was initially used for the purpose of testing new tools and cutting methods for the flawless Centenary Diamond. After nearly two years of cutting (the diamond has several cracks and inclusions), a golden-brown beauty outweighing the prized Cullinan I Diamond was revealed and thankfully earned a more flattering name. The Golden Jubilee Diamond was presented to the King of Thailand for the 50th Anniversary of his coronation.

3) The Centenary Diamond

centenary diamond
If you’re looking for the best of the best, the Centenary Diamond ranks as one of the biggest high quality diamond for three of your major Cs: Carat, Color, and Clarity. This diamond was discovered in 1986 at the Premier Mine, the same mine that yielded the Cullinan Diamond. At 273.85 carats, this diamond has flawless clarity and D color, the highest grade of colorlessness and certified by the GIA. The Centenary Diamond was naturally presented at the Centennial Celebration of the De Beers Consolidated Mines. The whereabouts of the diamond are currently unknown as it was purchased anonymously in 2008.

4) The Hope Diamond

In all of our heavy hitters, the Hope Diamond is easily the world’s most famous diamond. In fact it claims to be the second-most visited piece of artwork, after the Mona Lisa. The Hope Diamond is 45.52 carats and it is blue due to miniscule amounts of boron located in the gem’s structure. To add to its mystique, it is unknown as to when the Hope Diamond was discovered although the earliest mention on record is in 1812. And if the beheadings, murder, and intrigue didn’t convince you the diamond was cursed, the glowing red light will! The Hope Diamond also has a curious tendency to give off a faint red glow after it has been exposed to short-wave ultraviolet light. Recently, Harry Winston designed a new necklace setting for the Hope Diamond to replace the Cartier setting before it.

5) The Taylor-Burton Diamond

taylor burton diamond
Though not one of the largest diamonds, this diamond is certainly one of the most famous because of the romantic history behind it. Discovered in 1966, this diamond at 69.42 carats (also from the Premier Mine) is on record as the world’s first million-dollar stone. Harry Winston cut the diamond from its original 241 carats down to a pear shape and it was originally known as “the Cartier Diamond.” Richard Burton purchased the diamond for Elizabeth Taylor and it was renamed as the Taylor-Burton Diamond. The diamond was originally a ring, but deciding that it was too large Elizabeth Taylor had it re-set by Cartier as a necklace.

Top 5 Diamond Watches

When it comes to diamonds, for some individuals less is more. But for our top five diamond watches we’re going to recognize the brands who said the more bling the better! All of these watches are a sight to behold with unimaginable amounts of sparkle that will undoubtedly make a statement wherever the wearer goes.

1) Hublot 5 Million Dollar Big Bang Watch

hublot five million dollar bang
Hublot has long been known as a brand that pushes the edges of innovation and development, as seen in their recent release of the Antikythera watch at this year’s Baselworld. However, they also released another watch that caused a considerable amount of buzz. The 5 Million Dollar Big Bang watch is in the style of Hublot’s iconic Big Bang series but with every conceivable surface drowning in diamonds, and not just any diamonds either. All 1282 diamonds (totaling 140 carats) were gathered from all over the world and matched for superior color and clarity. These diamonds were painstakingly selected and adhered to the watch in an invisible setting, a process that required a team of 17 people working for 14 months. If you have an Elizabeth Taylor-like devotion to diamonds, then this is the watch for you.

2) Chopard Imperiale Tourbillion Full Set Diamond Watch

Chopard Imperiale Tourbillon Full-Set Watch
Chopard released a new edition to the Imperiale collection at Baselworld as well, also covered tip-to-tip in diamonds. This beautiful piece was designed to be the perfect combination between a timepiece and a piece of jewelry. The dial features a splendid array of diamonds with a snow-type setting with additional baguette diamonds lining the bezel and strap. Despite its breathtaking exterior, this watch also boasts a tourbillion complication that is certified by the COSC and has a power reserve indicator of purple amethyst.

3) Hublot Black Caviar Bang Watch

hublot black caviar bang
Hublot’s 1 Million Dollar Black Caviar Bang is the dark older sister of the 5 Million Dollar Bang released earlier this year. The Black Caviar Bang sports an 18 karat white gold case studded with rare, baguette black diamonds for a total of 34.5 carats. Besides the classy black diamonds, this watch also features a tourbillion complication and a power-reserve indicator. Like the diamonds it is made of, the Hublot Black Caviar Bang watch is a rare piece with only one edition ever created.

4) Harry Winston Rosebud Diamond Watch

harry winston rosebud watch
Harry Winston has a long history of being one of the most prestigious jewelers in the world. So it comes as no surprise that Harry Winston’s timepieces have the moniker of “Jewels That Tell Time.” This exquisite Rosebud watch is no exception. The watch case is set with a dazzling array of round, pear, and baguette cut diamonds for a total of 6.9 carats in a beautiful floral motif. The watch case separates from the band so that the timepiece can double as a pendant or a brooch.

5) Cartier Delices de Cartier Diamond Watch, Small Model

cartier delices watch HPI00458
Since its debut, Cartier’s Delices collection brings an unstated elegance to watch design. The case has delicate curves with an off-set oval-shaped dial. The fluid movement of the case is enhanced by a pave setting of round-cut white diamonds that transition into a pave diamond bracelet. This watch may be covered in diamonds, and yet it doesn’t seem ostentatious.

Baselworld 2012 Spotlight: Harry Winston Opus 12 Watch

Harry-Winston-Opus-12
Every year many anticipate what Harry Winston will be revealing at Baselworld. Last year in 2011 Harry Wintson introduced the Opus 11 which was a very unique and complex piece that used “pallets” to indicate time. The official Opus 11 video can be seen here.
This year Harry Winston unveils another exceptional timepiece to Baselworld 2012 with the Opus 12. The Opus 12 was in collaboration with Emanual Bouchet, an expert watchmaker whose passion stands to create genuine timepieces that have exceptional and complex ways of telling time. The Opus 12 features another nontraditional way of displaying time. Instead of using conventional hands that extrude from the center, the Opus 12 uses inverted hands that protrude from the outer brim inwards. The short blue hand indicates the hours and the longer hand mark the minutes.
These hands animate on the minutes and hours by flipping and turning to introduce a new of way of expressing time. Because the main minute hand only works in five minute increments, a minute indicator is incorporated that works also as a power reserve.
