Jonathan King, Partner and Director of Sales, King Jewelers, Appears Alongside Leaders of the Watch Industry in Revolution Magazine to Discuss Trends in Online Sales

Our very own Jonathan King appears in the latest edition of Revolution magazine alongside titans of the watch industry (including CEO of TAG Heuer, Zenith, and Hublot Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of Montblanc Nicolas Baretzki, and Co-President of Chopard Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, among others) to discuss the ever-growing and changing online retail scene.
Below, Mr. King explains in his own words how the watch industry is slowly evolving to incorporate a more robust online presence, and highlights what sets brick-and-mortar stores like King Jewelers apart from online-only sellers.
Be sure to pick up your copy of Revolution magazine and click here to read the article in full.
Jonathan King, Partner and Director of Sales, King Jewelers:
Nowadays, most people’s first point of contact with a watch brand or a jeweler is through the web. People find out about their next jeweler either via word of mouth or via an Internet search.
What we do notice is that we sell a lot of lower to mid-tier items on the site, but we have not yet made a significant watch sale through the web. A large percentage of our high-ticket transactions come from the initial discovery of our business through the web. The website allows people the comfort and luxury of browsing through our merchandise at their leisure, whenever they have time.
I think, in the future, just about everything will migrate online. The idea of brick-and-mortar is becoming less relevant. I think there will be a larger shift of the traffic from in-store to the web. Ultimately, I think a much greater percentage of transactions will be done online.
There will always be a need for the brick-and-mortar, which distinguishes companies like King Jewelers from people who are dealing only online. People are still looking for the credibility of the company, the warranty, the sizing and repair aspect.
When it comes to taking the knowledge to the next step, that’s where the salesman really comes into play, explaining the timepiece and guiding them to the right one. There will always be the need for the personal touch. There is a lot more than just purchasing online, you are going to need to service the watch, learn how to use it, buy new straps and have it sized. The relationship between the client and the store is very important as well for service and for future sales. We know every client by their name when they walk in, we know their birthdays, their anniversaries, their likes and dislikes.
Brick-and-mortar, multi-brand retailers are needed, so people can compare watches and see how they feel. We have been in business for more than 100 years, and we understand how to cultivate our clients. The brand boutiques and e-boutiques serve the purpose of information and image building. Many of our customers go see the watches in the boutiques, and then they come here and buy, because they have the relationship with us.

First-Ever United States Qualifying Tournament of The Cigar Smoking World Championship Deemed Overwhelming Success!

On Friday May 8th 2015 King Jewelers Nashville was honored to host the Cigar Smoking World Championship qualifying round for the first time ever on U.S. soil. This historical event included a night of fine cigars, watches, and jewelry with cocktails by Angels Envy, Simi Winery, and Robert Mondavi Winery. Delicious hors d’oeuvres were served with live Bahamian music outdoors while the cigar smoking championship entries gathered inside. Over 20 contestants from around the world came together to compete at the Nashville qualifying round.
Nashville was the appropriate choice of city to hold the first ever qualifying round in the U.S, as it is the home to the current World Cigar Smoking Champion, Darren Cioffi. In addition to his World Title, Darren is also the official champion in Switzerland, Croatia, and Serbia. He is also the President and founder of Principle Cigars.
Cioffi said, “The evening was as exciting as we’d hoped and was attended by people from 15 countries; not bad for an inaugural event. The setting of every prior qualifying round of this competition and every location to follow most assuredly pales in comparison to the fantastic setting that King Jewelers provided us for our event.”
Cigar Event 3
Marko Bilic of Cigar Club Mareva who sets the strict rules of the competition was also in attendance to regulate and ensure that the participants and the contest followed the guidelines were met to be considered a official and certified qualifying round. Bilic said, ‘We turned a new page in cigar world history, after six years of Cigar Smoking World Championships, dozens of qualification tournaments in world capital cities from west to east, the first ever CSWC tournament was held on American soil!”
Club Mareva establishes the rules for all the qualifying competitions, which involves the “slow-smoking” of a Mareva-size cigar. Normally enjoyed in about 25 minutes, the challenge is for participants to make their cigar smoke continually for the longest period of time without allowing the cigar to extinguish.
The winners of the Nashville qualifying around include: Third place, Petteri Patjas of Finland (1hr, 22min, 49sec), Second place, Eric Kyle of Nashville, TN (1hr, 28min, 32sec), and First place, Jason M. Lois of Louisville, KY (1hr, 58min, 02sec).
Cigar Event 2
Prizes including limited edition boxes of cigars from Principle Cigars and Macanudo and a Macanudo Waterford crystal ashtray were awarded to the participants with the three best times. The first-place winner, Jason Lois, is now qualified to participate in the 6th Annual Cigar Smoking World Championship to be held in September in Croatia.
King Jewelers was thrilled to host this historic event in Nashville. “King Jewelers was honored to host the first-ever qualifying round of the Cigar Smoking World Championship,” said David King, owner of King Jewelers Nashville. “Find watches and premium cigars find themselves adorning the same hands around the world. It was exhilarating to exhibit and celebrate the blending of these luxuries in such a significant way at this event.”

King Jewelers Takes On GnashVegas

Gnashvegas 2015

Leaving GnashVegas!

On Sunday, February 15th, fans of the Nashville Predators hockey team, the number one seat in the NHL, were able to drink, dine, gamble, and mingle with players, all in the name of charity.
It may have been cold outside, but inside over the Bridgestone Arena ice everyone was looking white hot! The winter weather warning threatened to put a damper on the night’s festivities, but the evening went off without a hitch, and everyone was home safely before Nashville’s “Ice Apocalypse” really kicked in.
GnashVegas Casino Night
The 5th annual GnashVegas Casino Night and Auction was a huge success, just as it’s been in years past, raising thousands of dollars for hundreds of non-profit organizations in Nashville. Attendees at this year’s event were able to brows our extensive collection of IWC timepieces in between conversations with their favorite hockey players.
Wives and Girlfriends GnashVegas
King Jewelers decided to show a little love to the less appreciated members of the franchise- wives and girlfriends of Predator’s players and staff members were loaned diamond jewelry of their choosing to wear during the big night.

Alpina Auction Donation GnashVegas

We also contributed to the wide variety of charity auction items- which included a set of signed hockey jerseys among other rarities. A $2,500 Stainless Steel Alpina GMT, perfect for the traveling sportsman, was donated to the auction with all sale proceeds going to non-profits.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Nashville Predators throughout this winning season and onward in the future, and we’re proud to contribute to worthy causes such as this one. For more information, visit the Nashville Predators website. See more photos from the evening below, and be sure to check out our Facebook Page for information on all of our upcoming events!
