Best Brands for Valentine’s Day Gifts, Men’s Edition: Montblanc

Whenever conversation turns to Valentine’s Day gifts, inevitably the focus is on gifts for the ladies- a dozen red roses, a box of chocolate, and a beautiful piece of jewelry aren’t uncommon tokens of affection on February 14th. It’s important to remember that Valentine’s Day is for the man in your life, too! What better way to show your affection than with an unexpected gift from a reputable brand like Montblanc?

Montblanc offers a variety of gifts for men including Swiss watches, cufflinks, and pens. (Items not to scale)

If your special someone is business savvy, Montblanc has a variety of boardroom-appropriate styles to choose from, such as elegant cufflinks, pens, and timepieces. Many people choose to give their partner a Montblanc pen accompanied by a handwritten love letter. We love this idea as it gives your gift an even more moving personal touch. Who knows, maybe he’ll be inspired to write a romantic note to you, too!

A Montblanc Pen Makes a Great Gift! Explore Montblanc Accessories Here

As you may have read on our page before, Montblanc was also one of the first Swiss timepiece brands to enter the “smartwatch” arena. Rather than trying to fuse Silicon Valley technology into their luxury Swiss movements, Montblanc elected instead to create an “e-strap”! A small LED screen is fixed to the watch strap and displays alerts for emails, texts, calendar appointments, and more, while the internal movement in the watch remains purely Swiss.

Smart Strap by Montblanc Adds Tech to Your Wrist

Montblanc e-Strap

Make Your Watch Instantly Smarter

If you’re a timepiece aficionado who’d like to stay relevant, but doesn’t want to trade in your favorite watch for Apple’s latest tech fad, Montblanc has your solution. The company has unveiled a new e-Strap which can be added to your existing watch, instantly transforming it into a “Smart Watch.”

The e-Strap is compatible with most major smart phones like Samsung, Android, and Apple
The e-Strap is compatible with most major smart phones like Samsung, Android, and Apple

The strap, which will retail for $300, features an OLED touchscreen which sits underneath your wrist. Using Bluetooth technology, the strap syncs to your smartphone and vibrates whenever you get a new alert- a text, email, or social media notification, for example. In addition, the strap will also function as a fitness tracker which will work in tandem with an included smartphone app. With just a tap of your finger, the e-Strap also plays music, takes pictures, and tracks your phone if you lose it.
The e-Strap is an available option on three new Timewalker models, or can be purchased separately for $300
The e-Strap is an available option on three new Timewalker models, or can be purchased separately for $300

For now, the e-Strap is designed specifically to fit 42 or 43mm watches from Montblanc’s Timewalker collection, but it should fit on any watch with similar spacing. A smart watch strap is a great alternative to a whole new smart watch, and as with all new and exciting tech gadgets, future generations will likely work through the initial kinks. Still, this is a promising step in the right direction for the watch industry, proving that they refuse to be cast aside by wearable technology. Tradition is alive and well, but it’s getting a great new facelift.

SIHH 2013 Spotlight: Montblanc TimeWalker Watches for Globetrotters

Montblanc TimeWalker Watch
Watches that simultaneously show the time in more than one zone are accordingly an important specialty for watchmakers. Such timepieces belong to a genre in which Montblanc has achieved several attention-getting feats. These so-called “time-zone watches” can satisfy very different requirements for globetrotters and frequent flyers. Among these functions are the simultaneous display of the times in both the user’s local and home zones or the UTC (Coordinated Universal Time +/- time zone) function, but also the ability to show all of the planet’s 24 time zones at a glance, including day/night indication for the home zone, as well as showing the date, facilitating quick and easy changes from one zone’s display to another, etc.
Montblanc combines the TimeWalker’s modern, contemporary design with technical horological competence in three different interpretations for people who love to travel. Extremely practical functions for travelers are offered in the unmistakable TimeWalker look with narrow bezel, spacious dial, unified typography for the numerals and elegantly skeletonized horns to affix the wristband.

Montblanc’s TimeWalker Hemispheres are a very special kind of world-time watches, which simultaneously show the different times in all 24 of the world’s time zones. The local time in the zone where the wearer is currently sojourning is shown by the hands, while the flange around the dial bears the names of 24 cities, each of which represents one of the 24 time zones into which our planet is divided. A 24-hour disc indicating the hours at the locations positioned radially opposite the disc’s markings on the flange turns at the center of the dial. Presto! The wearer can instantly see which hour has chimed on clocks in all of the world’s time zones.
That explains the functional principle of the mechanical Montblanc TimeWalker World-Time Hemispheres watches. As an additional exclusive feature, Montblanc has enriched these timepieces with another dimension. While the time zones progress with the sun from east to west across the meridians of longitude, Montblanc’s latest creation also brings the north-south axis into play because the Montblanc TimeWalker World-Time Hemispheres is available in a northern and a southern version. The Northern Hemisphere model shows a map of the Earth as seen from the north with the North Pole at its center; the Southern Hemisphere variant puts the South Pole in the midpoint. Logically, the ring of place names on the Northern Hemisphere model consists solely of locations in that hemisphere; the southern counterpart bears only the names of places situated south of the Equator. These different perspectives naturally affect the time displays and require corresponding adaptations in the mechanical movements. Both models have immobile rings around their dials marked with the 24 place names in the relevant hemisphere, but the 24-hour discs in the centers turn in opposite directions: the disc turns clockwise on the Northern Hemisphere watch, it bears a 24-hour scale labelled anticlockwise; the 24-hour disc on the Southern Hemisphere timepiece turns anticlockwise and bears a 24-hour scale labelled clockwise. The two TimeWalker World-Time Hemispheres models differ not only because of their different dials, but also because they’re equipped with different movements, which are necessary to rotate the 24-hour discs of the two timepieces in the proper directions. To assure that the wearer can keep an eye on the entire planet, from east to west and from north to south, the Northern Hemisphere watch bears the southern place names on its case back and vice versa.
Montblanc TimeWalker Watch
This spectacle is packed into a stainless steel TimeWalker case which measures 42 mm in diameter and has a very narrow bezel, thus leaving ample room for large and readily legible indicators: a time-zone ring with the 24 place names, an hour circle with the TimeWalker’s typical relief numerals and indices, a 24-hour disc in the center (where it turns clockwise in the one model and anticlockwise in the other) and a window for the date at the “6”. To preclude potential confusion, the northern model and southern variant each has its own color scheme. The Northern Hemisphere watch bears a silvery grey dial and is affixed to a sporty black leather strap. The wristwatch for the Southern Hemisphere has a dark anthracite-colored dial and a stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp.

SIHH 2013 Spotlight: Montblanc Villeret 1858 ExoTourbillon Chronographe Watch

Montblanc Villeret 1858 ExoTourbillon Chronographe Watch
The ExoTourbillon Chronographe adds another extraordinarily exclusive timepiece to the Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858. This regulator wristwatch combines a large minute-hand and elapsed-seconds hand at the center of the dial, a small off-center circle for the hours, a second time zone with day/night indication, a small hand for the continually running seconds and a chronograph with a counter for 30 elapsed minutes.
This Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858 Tourbillon first attracted admiring attention with its patented construction in 2010. Its balance is larger and oscillates on a different plane than the rotating cage. This exclusive timepiece now debuts in an attractive new edition which gives an entirely unprecedented look to its spectacular mechanisms. The 18 karat gold dial, which has a distinctively three-dimensional effect, is available with either black or silver-grey décor and with a finely grained texture that contrasts tastefully with shiny hands, applied subdials and polished steel components.

Browse Our Collections of Montblanc Luxury Timepieces for Sale

The ExoTourbillon Chronographe is the first watch in Montblanc’s Villeret 1858 Collection to unite two of the most avidly admired horological complications: a chronograph function and a tourbillon. Mastery of the difficulty of crafting these complications numbers among the distinguishing characteristics of the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret, which has here combined the two complications in a highly unusual fashion: the chronograph upholds the lovely tradition with a column-wheel and horizontal coupling, and the four-minute tourbillon boasts a never-before-seen innovation.

Tourbillon Chronograph with New Regulator Dial

Each model has the typical face of a regulator timepiece with a large minute-hand (and the chronograph’s elapsed-seconds hand) at the dial’s centre, complemented by an off-centre subdial for the hours with a pair of hour-hands for two different time zones: the hour in the local zone is shown by a golden hand with the same hue as the case; a blued hand indicates the hour in the other selected time zone. Various shapes arranged on different levels give the dial a strongly spatial effect that’s impossible to overlook. Time merely becomes the fourth dimension on this dial’s three dimensional stage. The performance begins with the clearly visible ExoTourbillon: its bridge is firmly screwed to a manually circular-grained plate and it offers an unobstructed view into the depths of the movement. The plate is coated with rhodium for the white gold watch; a layer of red gold gilds it in the red gold model. The main dial is crafted from solid gold and adorned with a finely grained grainé décor onto which all displays – except the small continually running second-hand at “9 o’clock” – are added as appliqués in the same color as the case. The subdial for the hours at “6 o’clock” has an outer and an inner numbered circle: these annuluses are separated from one another by a slightly inset zone with a fine sunburst pattern; both calibrated rings are circularly satin-finished and bear black Roman numerals. A slender raised border surrounds the subdial for the hours. A similar frame encloses the chronograph’s counter for 30 elapsed minutes at “3 o’clock”, where hands of different lengths and different colors serve two differently colored scales for 0 to 15 and 15 to 30 minutes.
Montblanc Villeret 1858 ExoTourbillon Chronographe Watch
At “4:30” is the finely encircled 24-hour subdial with a blued hand – matching the blued hand for the second time zone This subdial’s semicircular scales are colored either pale or dark to match the corresponding half of the day, and two grayish segments signify morning and evening twilight. The words “LEVER” (rise) and “COUCHER” (set) indicate the beginning and the end of the daytime hours at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.

Monopusher Chronograph with Column-Wheel Control

The Calibre 16.60 is a chronograph movement with a large and centrally axial counter for the elapsed seconds, a counter for 30 elapsed minutes, a classical column-wheel and horizontal coupling. The chronograph lever is elaborately finished by hand, and the mise en fonction is likewise accomplished manually: the surfaces where the chronograph lever contacts the column-wheel and the heart disc are observed through a watchmaker’s loupe during the operation of the chronograph’s functions and are gradually and meticulously abraded to a tolerance in the hundredths-of-a-millimeter range. The steel parts and the chronograph bridge (in the “V” shape typical of Minerva’s products) are manually beveled and polished.
A finely grained stone is used to polish the lever; the bridges are manually adorned with Geneva stripes. The large and massive balance, with weight screws along its rim and a Phillips curve at one end of its balance-spring, oscillates at the classical frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2.5 hertz), which makes it possible to measure brief intervals to the nearest fifth of a second. The chronograph’s start, stop and return-to-zero functions are operated sequentially by depressing a button in the crown.

Second Time Zone and Day/Night Display

Frequent flyers will appreciate the fact that the ExoTourbillon Chronographe can display the time in two different time zones. The skeletonized hour-hand on the hours subdial indicates the local time, while the tip of the blued steel hour-hand points to the hour in the wearer’s home time zone. When the watch is worn in the home zone, these two hands are always positioned one atop the other; when the wearer travels to a different time zone, he or she can press the button at the “8” to advance the local-time hour-hand in single-hour increments until the hand indicates the correct local time. The current time at the wearer’s home is shown on the little 24-hour dial with day/night indicator and blued steel hand.

SIHH 2013 Spotlight: Montblanc Star Quantième Complet Watch

Montblanc Star Quantieme Complet Watch
Montblanc’s Star Collection prioritizes classically beautiful wristwatches by combining this brand’s unmistakable aesthetic and the traditional Swiss art of watchmaking. Classical forms, materials, techniques and embellishments that have been timelessly handsome for decades and will continue to be so in future have characterized Montblanc’s Star Collection for over fifteen years. This tradition continues with the new Montblanc Star Quantième Complet, a gent’s wristwatch that’s equally appropriate with a classical business suit or to complement the formal elegance of a tuxedo.
A classically round wristwatch with a full calendar (i.e. date, day of the week, month and lunar phases) is a rare species. Either its calendar shows only the date or else the watch boasts a full-fledged perpetual calendar and costs several tens of thousands of euros. Montblanc closes the gap between both extremes with the new Star Quantième Complet.

Browse Our Collections of Montblanc Luxury Timepieces for Sale

The name is indeed descriptive. Francophone watchmakers use the terms “quantième” to describe the calendar function and “complet” to mean “complete” or “full”. This latest model in the Montblanc Star Collection has a classically elegant dial that shows both the time of day or night and a full array of calendarical data. The date is indicated by a hand which culminates in a little red crescent that sweeps along a wreath of thirty-one digits around the dial’s periphery. In accord with the best tradition, the day of the week and the month appear in little windows arranged along a horizontal line at the “12”. The lower half of the dial is reserved for the moon-phase display, which also emulates the changing phases of this heavenly body during the day, when the real moon is either pale or entirely invisible.
All this takes place on a dial that boasts all the attributes of timeless elegance. The center bears a fine guilloche décor. The brand’s name is written in black on a cartouche at the “12”. A wreath of black Roman numerals indicates the hours. This circle is concentrically succeeded by the minute-ring with its segmented scale. As already mentioned, the extreme periphery hosts the date-ring, which is calibrated from 1 to 31. A set of blued steel hands orbit above this noble background: the hours and minutes are indicated by feuille-shaped hands; the seconds are shown by a slender, straight hand with a skeletonised counterweight shaped like Montblanc’s distinctive emblem; and a slim hand tipped by a red crescent points to the date.
With its new Star Quantième Complet, Montblanc launches a timepiece that possesses all the attributes of a genuine classic and combines sovereign elegance with masculine flair. This model is also available with a stainless steel case that gives a somewhat modern touch to its classical elegance.

SIHH 2013 Spotlight: Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours Watch

Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours Watch
After observing the evolution of Montblanc’s Nicolas Rieussec chronographs, one might be tempted to conclude that time is a disc. Montblanc first used rotating discs to replace the hands on the chronograph’s counters for sixty elapsed seconds and thirty elapsed minutes. A rotating disc was afterwards installed to indicate the hour in a second time zone. And now the Montblanc manufacture debuts its Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours, which relies on two discs, one atop the other, to show not only the twelve hours, but to also indicate whether each of the dozen is a daytime or night-time hour.

Although the time display on the Rising Hours chronograph is new and revolutionary, this timepiece is nevertheless a typical member of the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Collection, which first embodied an outstandingly successful idea in 2008, when the brand launched the first wristwatch chronograph with a genuinely new look in which the discs turn and its hands stand still. Now this principle has undergone further evolution to display the “ordinary” (i.e. non-elapsed) hours, which Montblanc’s engineers have augmented with an appealing complication: they’ve built a day/night indication into the hour display.
Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours Watch
This unusual time display is made possible by the new manufacture calibre MB R220, which boasts an elaborate patented mechanism consisting of two rotating discs positioned one atop the other. The Arabic numerals 1 to 12 are cut from the upper disc. This twelve-hour disc turns above the bicolour day/night disc, which is half pastel blue and half black so that a light or dark hue appears in the skeletonised numeral in the window depending on the time of day or night. The twelve-hour disc rotates continually, while the day/night disc turns in intervals and at variable speeds to produce the desired colour change (pale blue for the night, black for the day) in the cut-out numerals. This complex motion is controlled with the aid of a Maltese cross mechanism consisting of two cam-like wheels. One of these cams is mounted on the propelling staff of the day/night disc; the other is affixed to an extension of the hour-staff.
Each cam’s profile is specially shaped so that the cams turn idly past one another between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. (and again between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.); the day/night disc is accordingly motionless throughout both these intervals. Meshing begins at 3 a.m. (and 3 p.m.). This engagement causes the day/night disc to turn at an increasingly faster pace until two teeth on either side engage in a way that the day/night disc no longer accelerates but instead continues to turn synchronously with the twelve-hour disc – this occurs from 4:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. (and from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.). Afterwards, the day/night disc decelerates between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. (and between 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.) until the meshing is completely separated, whereupon the day/night disc comes to a standstill.
Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours Watch
This patented “Rising Hours” mechanism is particularly self-explanatory twice a day: at six o’clock each morning, the pierced digit “6” appears light blue on the left and black on the right to symbolize that night is ending and day is dawning; at six o’clock each evening, black daylight at the left yields to pastel blue night-time hours at the right.
In addition to this double-disc mechanism, four other disc displays rotate in the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours. The day of the week is shown in a window at the “9” and the date appears in an aperture at the “3”. Naturally, the chronograph’s function likewise relies on the same unmistakable concept, with one disc to count sixty elapsed seconds and another to tally up to thirty elapsed minutes. The technical basis of the calibre with integrated chronograph is largely identical with the movements in the other Nicolas Rieussec models. This latest chronograph likewise has only one button, which is unconventionally but ergonomically positioned at “8 o’clock”, where the wearer’s thumb can conveniently operate it. In accord with tradition, this chronograph is controlled by a column-wheel which couples and uncouples in a very modern and low-wear manner via a vertical friction coupling. Also noteworthy are the innovative profiles on the gear-train’s teeth, which optimize energy transfer while minimizing both wear and energy consumption. The rate is regulated by a massy 10-mm-diameter screw balance which oscillates very regularly thanks to its high moment of inertia (12 mgcm²) and its frequency of 28,000 A/h (4 Hz). The regularity of the rate is further enhanced by the double barrel, which amasses a 72-hour power reserve and maintains a very constant level of torque throughout a lengthy interval. A self-winding mechanism keeps the power reserve constantly high as long as the watch is worn.

The Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours chronograph is also available in 950 platinum and in stainless steel versions. The platinum variant is limited to 28 timepieces, each of which is affixed to a grey alligator-leather strap with a white gold folding clasp. The stainless steel version has a black alligator-leather strap with a folding clasp.

SIHH 2013 Spotlight: Montblanc Star Classique Watch

Montblanc Star Classique Watch
Montblanc’s Star Collection embraces a whole series of classically beautiful wristwatches that wed the brand’s unmistakable aesthetic and the traditional art of Swiss watchmaking. These watches follow no trends and will therefore never go out of style. Instead, they embody timelessly elegant design which will seem as convincing and harmonious to tasteful individuals many years from now as it seems to their discerning forebears today. New models will soon be added to further enhance this imperishably classical look by combining it with a mechanical inner life crafted in accord with the best Swiss tradition: there will be a diamond-studded watch for ladies, as well as a bi-color version in stainless steel and gold in sizes for ladies and gents. This latter duo is conceived for two people who already belong together or hope to become a loving couple.
Montblanc Star Classique Watch
A diamond is perennial and so too is the fascination that this queen of gems exerts on women, so there’s no more beautiful reason to adorn a lady’s watch with 72 brilliant-cut diamonds weighing more than half a carat (circa 0.526 ct). These gemstones sparkle with a radiance that will bring a similarly bright gleam into the eyes of the lady who owns them. The incandescent twinkle of the diamonds gorgeously contrasts with the softly nacreous shimmer of the white mother-of-pearl dial and sub-dial for the seconds with its red-gold-plated appliqués and hands. The seconds display is further embellished with an engraving of Montblanc’s emblem. The result is a subtle light show that presents a new staging with each successive motion of its wearer’s wrist. The theater for this show is a classically elegant, very slim, circular case made of 18 ct red gold: with a diameter of 34 millimeters and an un-ostentatious height of 8.9 millimeters, this case is perfectly dimensioned to achieve its fullest effects.
The Montblanc Star Classique Lady Automatic is an irresistible piece of jewelry for ladies who believe that inner values are as important as external beauty and timeless elegance.

Particularly strong emotions are evoked by wristwatches which not only combine craftsmanly perfection, traditional Swiss precision and timelessly classical aesthetics, but also convey a romantic message. Such timepieces are available as lady’s and gent’s models that are identical in appearance and differ only in their dimensions. A perfect example of this category is the new Montblanc Star Classique Steel-Gold Automatic, which will be available in diameters of 34 and 39 millimeters, each of which encases a mechanical movement.
Montblanc Star Classique Watch
The new Montblanc Star Classique Steel-Gold is a high point in classical watch design and has the best prerequisites for becoming a veritable classic. With a round, very flat case and a
narrow bezel, it embodies understated simple elegance that outlasts ephemeral fashions. The color contrast between warm 18 ct red gold and cool stainless steel on the case and bracelet has been a classic for decades and has lost none of its appeal today. As the Star Classique Steel-Gold convincingly proves, this contrast not only creates an attractive aesthetic, but also has a functional aspect. The pale dial, which is white mother-of-pearl in the lady’s model and matte silvery grey for gents, matches the stainless steel tone-in-tone.
