Bridal Tips: Something Blue

Jan 13, 2011

Everyone knows the old wedding proverb “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” as a list of the four essential items that a bride is supposed to bring with her to the aisle. If your wedding date is looming on the horizon, you may want to consider incorporating some blue jewelry to give a little glamor to this familiar tradition.

Sapphires

Most ladies may think of this dark blue gemstone when they consider blue jewelry. Sapphires were king in the engagement ring world until diamonds took over during the Victorian period. Sapphires represent fidelity and truth, and also rank highly on the Moh’s hardness scale so they are optimal for daily use. The most valuable sapphires are medium to royal blue. Girls with dark blue eyes will find that a pair of sapphire earrings with accent their eyes nicely. A sapphire eternity band would also be a clean and simple choice for blue.

Topaz

For brides who want a brighter shade of blue, topaz is a good gemstone to contemplate and add some color without the cost. Topaz is naturally a colorless stone and it is heat-treated to give it that sky blue tone. Topaz represents understanding and wisdom and 56 blue topazes are set into England’s crown of St. Edward. However, topaz is prone to getting damages and therefore we recommend using it as a pendant or a pair of earrings.

Aquamarine

Aquamarine is a gemstone with a lot of variety in terms of opacity and shades of blue. It has been nicknamed “the sailor’s stone” because sailors used to wear it as protection from seasickness. Generally this gemstone is mostly translucent with a soft blue tone. Aquamarine stones are a symbol of health, hope, and youth. Try layering aquamarine and you can show as little or as much blue as you want. More saturated aquamarine will be more valued, but lighter colored stones are easier on the wallet.

Chalcedony

Chalcedony is an opaque to translucent gemstone with lovely blue hues. Chalcedony represents health and safety and is also one of the twelve gemstones set in the foundations of Jerusalem’s city walls. Chalcedony is extremely durable and easy to care for. We recommend wearing cabochon-cut chalcedony as it accents the opaque nature of the gemstone.
