Harry Winston’s Opus 11 Reconstructs Time

Apr 06, 2011

Harry Winston’s famed Opus collection was first conceived back in 2000 with the intention of involving a world famous watchmaker in collaboration with Harry Winston to create innovative, limited edition watches. Since then, Harry Winston has released an addition to the esteemed Opus series annually and this year at Baselworld, Harry Winston more than exceeded expectations for its latest development.

The Opus 11, developed by watchmaker Denis Giguet, is a bogglingly complex display of time. Giguet said that the concept behind the Opus 11 was to “make time explode.” The center of the watch displays the hour numeral, which upon the change of the hour the numeral breaks apart to reassemble and form the next hour. The center numeral is formed by four satellites mounted on a rotating platform. It’s a design that needs to be seen in action to be fully understood.

The minutes are displayed on the side of the main watch case in a smaller round disc, with one jumping disk for the tens and a running disk for the units. The smaller round disc displays the titanium balance-wheel. The 18 karat white gold, shock-resistant case holds a manually winding movement with an astounding 566 components and 155 jewels (the average chronograph watch has 48 jewels). The strap is tapered black alligator leather with a triple blade folding clasp.

The Opus 11 will be a limited edition of 111 pieces, 100 in white gold and 11 in white gold and diamonds. This watch will have a power reserve of 48 hours and will be water resistant up to 30 meters. Below is a video of the components of the Opus 11 movement and how they work to tell the hour.

This is another video from Ariel Adams interviewing Denis Giguet on the concepts behind the development of the Opus 11 as well as views of a live model in action.

Denis Giguet was trained as an engineer before he became a watchmaker. Giguet developed his craft by working with Rolex and Harry Winston before eventually becoming the production manager for Harry Winston. In 2007, Giguet launched his own brand, dubbed MCT, best known for the Sequential One watch.
