In 1956 Commander Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Louis Malle created a film documenting underwater life called “The Silent World,” which triggered a new worldwide obsession with exploring the ocean. In this early period of water expeditions, there was no precedent for creating a diving watch. Three years later in response to the trend, Jaeger-LeCoultre released the first automatic diving watch furnished with an alarm. This watch became known as the Memovox Deep Sea. Water resistant up to 100 meters, this watch became extraordinarily popular with divers because of the alarm that sounded to alert divers of when to make their ascent to the surface. The 1959 Deep Sea Memovox was released in two versions: one for European sports’ enthusiasts, and one for American divers.
Jaeger-LeCoultre officially announced at the 2011 SIHH that they will release two limited editions modeled after the two original diving watches from 1959 called the “Tribute to the Deep Sea Memovox.” Both watch editions have identical features of the original models. The only exception to this is the stainless steel case diameter was increased from 39mm to 40.5mm to suite contemporary tastes. The case back is also engraved with the same frogman illustration surrounded by bubbles. Another key point for vintage fans, both of these watches use a plexiglass crystal.
