Mikimoto Has Survived Disaster and Thrived at Baselworld

Apr 11, 2011

After the recent earthquake and tsunami devastation in Japan, pearl-manufacturing giant Mikimoto verified that all of their employees were safe and that the Mikimoto facilities and pearl farms sustained minimal damage from the disaster. Currently the brand is working towards fundraising and making donations to aid all Japanese relief efforts. Despite the havoc in Japan, Mikimoto still made an appearance at Baselworld this year to release some stunning new creations.

Mikimoto released exciting new pieces featuring the rare pink conch pearls. Conch pearls are produced by the Queen Conch mollusk and the pearl is often found within the flesh of the mollusk. The Queen Conch mollusk is found in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. The most prized conch pearls have a deep pink color with a characteristic flame-like structure.

To date there is no possible way to culture these pearls. The Queen Conch mollusk is much more sensitive than oysters and thus much less tolerant of today’s cultured pearl methods. Since the pearls are in the flesh of the conch, they’re also more difficult to harvest. Besides the inability to be cultured, these pearls are also exceedingly rare because only 15% – 20% of the conch produce these pearls and the harvested pearls that are of gem quality are even fewer.

Mikimoto introduced a new collection, named “Twist” that features white, yellow, or black South Sea pearls in free-form designs. The pearls are set in 18 karat white gold and a few pieces are adorned with diamond accents.

Mikimoto also released a collection named “Ivy” comprised of larger South Sea white and golden pearls with branch-like additions of pave diamonds. The pearls in this collection are at a minimum of 13mm in diameter.
