Pantone Names Emerald as the 2013 Color of the Year

Jan 02, 2013

Pantone recently announced their chosen color for the year 2013 and much to our joy, it is none other than the luscious emerald. We’re naturally big fans of this year’s color choice since there are so few colors with such a rich history like the emerald.

Emerald’s time in the spotlight has been a long time in coming. Over the past couple of year’s this color has started appearing more and more on the red carpet with stars such as Angelina Jolie, Amy Adams, and Blake Lively in the form of emerald jewelry and dresses. Before that, emerald was the gem dedicated to the goddess Venus in Rome, was one of the most valued gemstones in Egyptian culture, and endlessly coveted by Spanish conquistadors in Columbia. Roman emperor Nero had eyeglasses made of emerald in order to improve the health of his eyes and Oz wouldn’t be the same without the Emerald City.

Since 2000 Pantone has been choosing a color of the year which usually is chosen after the company holds an intense two day debate in an undisclosed location. For the past couple of years Pantone has leaned towards bright, jewel-like tones and quoting that this year’s decision was chosen because it is “a color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance, and harmony.” Which would make sense after the long winter season that most anyone would be looking to introduce a pop of color into their life. And when mixed with the right colors, emerald can make a memorable fashion statement.
