For most men, cufflinks may have the stuffy air of old formalities and antiquated social rituals, but like most vintage trends and with the help of shows like Mad Men cufflinks are making a comeback in a big way. Cufflinks are no longer just for formal events and are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to give a suit multiple new looks. When matched with a suit correctly, cufflinks add an air of refinement and class unlike any other men’s accessory. Materials still include the classics of gold and mother-of-pearl, but with modern additions such as carbon fiber and titanium, it’s obvious that these cufflinks aren’t just for your grandpa’s cocktail party.
How to Wear CufflinksCufflinks are worn with shirts that sport a French cuff. The French cuff is exactly like a normal dress shirt cuff with the exception that there are no buttons. French cuffs were traditionally used for formal shirts but these days they have been incorporated into more casual shirt designs. The cuff, usually heavily starched to keep it stiff, is folded over and buttoned with a cufflink. When the cuff is folded, line up the two button holes and thread the cufflink through. Dress shirts without the folding French cuff can easily be tailored to be designed for the use of cufflinks.
Cufflinks have several mechanisms in which to keep the buttonholes of the sleeve together. The swivel bar can twist to align parallel with the body of the cufflink so that it can be threaded through the button holes, and then once through the holes, it twists out to be perpendicular to the body of the cufflink. Cufflinks can also have a button mechanism where two pieces of the cufflink will have a button shape with a bar or chain attaching them. The smaller button can be threaded through the button holes and a button is then shown on each side of the sleeve. The whale back enclosure is similar to the swivel, except the end of the cufflink to be threaded leans from one side to the other. Cufflinks also come with a fixed backing, which means the cufflink has a fixed post and backing that do not shift.

The key to matching cufflinks with your suit generally relies on what other accessories you’re wearing. The cufflink color should match your belt buckle and your wristwatch. Brown shoes usually call for warmer colored cufflinks, like gold, and black shoes should lean towards cooler-colored metals like silver and titanium. Any other colors found in your cufflinks should be in the same color range as your tie or dress shirt. Solid colored cufflinks are usually a safe bet as it means they are likely to match more outfits.
Cufflinks also come in all varieties of sizes, designs, and materials. If more traditional cufflinks designs aren’t your preference, there is a wide range of novelty cufflinks sure to suit your style and unlike novelty ties, novelty cufflinks aren’t considered to be tacky. This flexibility and accommodation to different tastes is also what makes cufflinks great gifts.
