Wristwatches have come a long way to become the beloved art form and status symbol that they are today. While varying methods of telling time (sundials, water clocks, hourglasses) have been around for centuries, the development of the wristwatch has been fairly recent. Older clocks were used for navigational purposes or indicating prayer times.
The technology that started paving the way for portable timepieces was the invention of the mainspring, a tightly wound spring that serves as the power source in mechanical timepieces, back in 15th century Europe. Watches transitioned into wearable pieces in 16th century Germany when they were made to be fastened to clothing or worn on a chain as a necklace. But as these watches were a middle size between clocks and the watches we know today, we imagine that their large size gave more of an albatross around the neck effect. These timepieces were also notoriously inaccurate.
The development of waistcoats in the 17th century led men to start keeping these portable timepieces in pockets, but women’s watches remained nothing more than necklaces until the 19th century. Up until this point watches didn’t have minute hands, but they start appearing on watch dials in the later part of the 17th century. The following century sees massive developments in watch technology with the addition watch complications as well as the balance spring, chronometers, the escapement, and many more.
It’s not until 1868 when Patek Philippe puts all of the parts together and makes the first watch to be worn on the wrist. Called “wristlets” these watches did not make as big of a splash as Philippe probably hoped. Most men seeing these watches as feminine, would rather be caught dead than wearing a wristwatch.
Louis Cartier designs a distinctly masculine wristwatch in 1904, but wristwatches don’t become a significant favorite among men until World War I in 1914. It was far more convenient to check your wrist for the time in the trenches rather than dig out a pocket watch. Also, the design of the watch became standardized which led to advances in materials and production methods.
After that developments quickly snowballed and timepieces became the watches that we know and love today.

Men aren’t the only ones who love watches. Ladies watches have come a long way since the dainty timepieces of their grandmothers. Now women’s watches have heft, complications, high-tech materials, and most of all, extraordinary quality. If you’re looking to give the lady in your life a watch this holiday season, below are our suggestions for beautiful timepieces that won’t break the bank.
1) TAG Heuer Formula 1 Ceramic Watch ref. WAH1210.BA0859 – msrp $1800
TAG Heuer’s first experiment with combining ceramic and stainless steel has been wildly successful. Women are growing in number as part of TAG Heuer’s fan base and this ladies Formula 1 is a fantastic response to that. The matte scratch resistant ceramic and the polished steel make for a dramatic look that is easily worn from day to night. The average case size for women’s watches used to be 34mm, but lately this trend seems to be leaning in the other direction as this watch has a size of 37mm with a quartz movement.
The Imperiale watches are a sumptuous collection made only for women. This watch in particular has a regal appearance with the classic Roman numerals on the mother of pearl dial and blade shaped hands to indicate the time. Within the supple 28mm stainless steel case is a quartz movement. This watch is filled with small details like the cabochon jewel set in the watch crown and the delicately lattice engraved center of the dial. This is definitely an elegant watch for the modern woman.
3) Cartier Tank Solo Steel & Leather Watch ref. W520000 – msrp $2600
This year has been the year of the Tank for Cartier after they introduced a new member of this popular family. This Tank in particular is extraordinarily Jacqueline Kennedy in nature. Although Jackie wore a Cartier Tank Louis, this watch has a similar aesthetic with the black leather strap and classic black Roman numerals on a white dial. The Tank Solo has a quartz movement and Cartier’s famous sword-shaped hands. For any fashionista who lists Jackie O. as one of their fashion icons, this watch is a must.
This particular Chanel watch just made a comeback this year after being unavailable for the last few years. The pink sapphires on the bezel give this J12 a playful look and there are additional diamond indicators on a mother of pearl dial. After all, who doesn’t want more sparkle on their watch? The diameter of the watch is 33mm with a quartz movement packed into a sturdy white high-tech ceramic case.
5) Frederique Constant Slim Line Rose Gold & Diamond Watch ref. FC-220M4SD32 – msrp $2150
Frederique Constant excels at creating a big look in a watch for a low cost. The Slim Line watch is particularly beautiful and we love the combination of rose gold paired with the chocolate brown satin strap. The stainless steel case is 37mm with a quartz movement but that bezel is a solid (not plated!) 18 karat rose gold set with pave diamonds. The slender case also makes this watch easy to wear and those Roman numerals make it an instant classic.

Our Nashville Watch Fair is always an exciting time for us because all of the exciting watch releases from the Swiss watch shows are finally going to be in our store! But while not everyone is a watch aficionado, there are undoubtedly watches that anyone would enjoy. So if you’re thinking about buying a luxury watch for the man in your life, these are our top suggestions 2012.
What’s not to like about this watch? Aside from having a beautifully clean design of stainless steel and crisp rose gold numerals, this watch is both a sport and a dress watch. The steel and black leather combination have a timeless look that will match any look, whether in the office or about town. The chronograph display uses only the two sub-dials for a minimal looks. IWC prides themselves on their elegant nautical inspired designs and dedication to precision. This watch also has an automatic movement so the wearer never has to worry about winding or changing the battery.
This Ronde Solo watch has all of the classic elements of Cartier. The dial has the elegant black Roman numerals with striking sword-shaped blued steel hands and an automatic movement contained within a solid 18 karat rose gold case. Another nice touch is the smaller 24 hour military time scale on the dial for a subtle way to indicate time. This watch has a very thin case for having an automatic movement so it fits easily beneath a shirt cuff. This watch has the look of an instant family heirloom to be passed on for generations.
Any avid traveler needs something to help with the transitions between time zones. Introducing the Breitling Chronomat GMT as your favorite new traveling companion with dual time zones and a 24 hour time zone indicator. The bezel will rotate in either direction and this watch has a chronograph function in addition to an anti-reflective and scratch resistant sapphire crystal. The blue of the dial looks sharp set next to the stainless steel of the sturdy 44mm case.
The TimeWalker collection from Montblanc is a beautiful set of watches. They’re clean, unique looking, and flawlessly easy to read. The combination of the white dial with the rose gold Arabic numerals offsets the chocolate color of the leather strap and the 42mm case holds an automatic movement. There is also an understated date display at the six o’clock position that gives the TimeWalker watch a fantastically clean and thoroughly modern look.
5) TAG Heuer Formula 1 Stainless Steel Watch ref. WAU1113.BA0858 – msrp $1300
TAG Heuer’s Formula 1 series is one of their more popular collections and it’s easy to see why. This sporty watch has a chronograph with red-tipped indicators and even an alarm to make extra sure that you’re on time. And for any competitive racing enthusiast, the technology behind the Formula 1 collection was influenced by none other than the McLaren Formula 1 team and drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are among the ranks of individuals who wear TAG Heuer’s Formula 1 watches. This bold chronograph has a satin-finished stainless steel case that softens the look of the watch.

It’s been an exciting year in watchmaking and we’re proud to announce that our annual Watch Fair will be taking place this Thursday to Saturday in Nashville. We’ll have all of the latest designs from our luxury watch brands so come check it out! Since we’re gearing up for the Watch Fair, we managed to pare down this year’s watch releases to our Top 5 favorites below.
1) IWC Top Gun Pilot’s Doppel Chronograph Watch ref. 3880
Every year IWC takes the time to revamp one of its watch collections for the Swiss Watch fairs and this year is the year of the Pilot. The “Top Gun” refers to the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, so what insignia could be more perfect for this Pilot watch?
This watch has the classic aviator functions like a chronograph flyback function and an in-house movement protected by a soft-iron inner case from magnetic fields. The dial design is reminiscent of a flight cockpit and an altimeter. Although this IWC Pilot watch is rooted in tradition, the look is thoroughly contemporary with a titanium case coated with ceramic.
It’s not often that a ladies watch comes by and takes your breath away, but this newest collection from Jaeger-LeCoultre has done it. The Rendez-Vous watches are the perfect combination of timeless beauty and a highly original look. These ladies watches have a slight Art Deco Flair in their design and have diamond bezel, mother of pearl dial, Arabic numerals, a day/night indicator in the 6 o’clock position, and a sapphire case-back to show off that in-house movement. Diane Kruger, the brand ambassador for Jaeger-LeCoultre, served as the inspiration for this sophisticated watch line.
Cartier also decided to pay tribute this year to one of its most popular watch collections, the Tank series. The design and the name of the Tank watches is said to have come from the tire treads of military tanks in WWI and subsequent members of this watch family have been named after France (Francaise) and America (Americaine). This year Cartier released the Tank Anglaise and this mid-size gold and steel version is clean-cut. The lines of the bracelet flow seamlessly together into the rectangular case and it features the best of both worlds, steel and 18 karat rose gold. The case holds an automatic Cartier mechanical movement.
This watch has been getting a lot of press lately due to the fact that it was recently spotted on the wrist of David Beckham, Breitling’s newest brand ambassador. Aside from that, this is a pretty fantastic looking watch. The Unitime houses a brand new in-house “universal time” chronograph movement that allows the watch to keep track of time in all 24 time zones seamlessly, as well as the date and all chronograph functions. The Breitling Transocean Unitime Chronograph makes the perfect jet-setting companion for any traveler.
5) TAG Heuer Carrera Jack Heuer 80th Birthday Limited Edition Watch ref. CV2119
Jack Heuer was the man responsible for launching TAG Heuer’s bestselling Carrera line back in 1964 and as the name suggests, this watch was created to commemorate Jack Heuer’s 80th birthday this year. This Carrera in particular is heavily modeled after the original 2447S Carrera from the 1960s with its silver sunburst dial and silver applied markers and hands. The new Carrera has the traditional 2 register “bi-compax” chronograph display rather than the three sub-dial display. Plus, the Jack Heuer Carrera has a slick bright red second-hand and a date display in the six o’clock position.

It’s day two of the Nashville Watch Fair and we’re still going strong! If you’re trying to drive anywhere downtown today you’ll notice we’re not the only event running today. This morning Nashville’s Country Music Marathon is also going on today and in honor of the event, we’ve compiled a list of our top five chronographs.
If you’re not familiar with chronograph complications, chronograph watches are timepieces that have a stopwatch function and a time function that operate independently of each other. A chronograph watch is most recognizable by its three sub-dials on the watch face, one for hours, minutes, and seconds. So if you want a watch to show your race time down to the second, a chronograph is a way to go.
Top Five Chronograph Watches
1. IWC Pilot Classic Chronograph Watch IW371704
IWC never fails to be a timelessly classic-looking watch. This chronograph in particular has an undeniable high-quality look without being obvious about it. The IWC Classic Pilot Chronograph has a hefty 42mm stainless steel case that contains an in-house mechanical movement. The dial is black with white, propeller-like hands, day and date display, and the three chronograph sub-dials are oriented to the left. This watch has a 44-hour power reserve and the chronograph function is capable of timing for up to twelve hours.
The Master Compressor also boasts of a robust 41.5mm stainless steel case. However, because this chronograph has such a balanced design between the lugs and the bracelet, it doesn’t look overpowering when worn. The case holds an automatic winding movement with a tachymeter function on the interior of the bezel. For those of you who want to keep track of your average speed as well as your overall time, a tachymeter will allow you to calculate the speed based on your travel time. The matte black dial contrasts nicely with the stark white and red accents.
3. Breitling B01 Chronomat Watch CB011012/B957
The Breitling B01 Chronomat is nothing short of regal. This chronograph is for the person who wants a watch with stopwatch accuracy, but still wants that watch to look elegant enough for a night on the town. This watch has a beautiful yellow gold and stainless steel two-tone design with a two-tiered black dial. The case is 43.5mm and packs a punch with Breitling’s precision, COSC certified, B01 in-house movement that has a 70 hour power reserve.
Hublot Big Bang Bode Bang Chronograph Watch 301.CI.2010.RX.BDM09
You can’t go wrong with Hublot’s iconic Big Bang watch series. This is a clean, sportier looking chronograph with a unique 44.5mm black ceramic case design held together with H-screws. The nice thing about this watch is that it is a chronograph, but that’s not the first feature of the watch that you notice. The case tapers into a textured black rubber strap that can withstand all kinds of abrasions, corrosion, sweat, and other abuses. This is a wonderfully contemporary watch that will go everywhere you do.
IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Watch IW390204
IWC released these watches with a nod in the design direction of the Yacht Club automatics from the 1960s. This chronograph has a flyback function, which means it takes only one button to start the stopwatch capabilities instead of two or three. The nautically inspired watch has a 45.5mm stainless steel case holding an in-house self-winding mechanical movement. The dial black with elegant silver Arabic numerals and it has an additional flange with quarter-second calibration for recording short periods of time and an analog display for longer periods. The Yacht Club also has a uniquely textured black rubber strap.
