Friday’s Watch Feature: Girard-Perregaux Traveller Chronograph

Today, we’re exploring another great watch brand we have in our Aventura salon, Girard-Perregaux. These masters of haute horology have been around since 1791 and have had plenty of time to master their craft! Today, we’ll focus on their Traveller Chronograph, the perfect choice for an often-traveling businessman. Girard-Perregaux describes it best by saying the Traveller collection is for “anyone for whom the passing hours are a journey to be savored at every instant.”
While the Girard-Perregaux Traveller Chronograph is available in a few different variations, our favorites are the 18K Rose Gold versions. There’s just something about a men’s rose gold timepiece that never fails to catch our attention! There are two rose gold editions of the Traveller Chronograph: rose gold with a silver dial on a brown strap (reference number: 49700-52-134-BB6B) and rose gold with a black dial on a black strap (reference number: 49700-52-632-BB6B).

The watch has a self-winding mechanical GP03300-0084 movement contained within a 44mm 18K rose gold case. The movement has a 46-hour power reserve, 63 Jewels, and a frequency of 28,800 VpH. It is covered by scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and features a sapphire crystal case back, allowing you to look into the heart of the movement. Louis Moinet Memoris Nominated for 2015 GPHG Award

Louis Moinet’s Memoris Nominated for Best Chronograph in the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie of Geneva

You’ve heard us talk a lot about Memoris, the impressive, first-ever chronograph watch created by Louis Moinet. This timepiece puts the traditional “time telling” function of the watch on the back-burner; instead, the chronograph function has been shifted to the most prominent position on the dial.
We’re not the only ones to take notice of this truly revolutionary timepiece, however. This year the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie of Geneva has nominated the Memoris for an award in the Chronograph category. Held annually, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie of Geneva aims “…to yearly highlight and reward high-quality creations in order to nurture the advancement of the watchmaking art and contribute to promoting the watch industry worldwide.”
All watch brands are eligible for nomination in any one of the twelve categories, regardless of their nation of origin. The twelve possible categories include:

The winners will be announced on October 29th, 2015 at the Grand Théâtre de Genève.

Four-Time Indy Champion Scott Dixon Partners with Louis Moinet to Create Exclusive Timepiece

On August 30, 2015, Louis Moinet ambassador Scott Dixon won the IndyCar Grand Prix of Sonoma, CA auto race. The win makes him an impressive four-time winner of the Indy Championship. In honor of this feat, Louis Moinet has revealed a new, limited edition, Indy inspired timepiece from the Legends collection, aptly named “The Scott Dixon.”
The Scott Dixon is a two-pusher, automatic chronograph which has been specifically designed with racing drivers and motorsport enthusiasts in mind. The 45.6mm stainless steel case has a carbon-fibre lower bezel with a tachymeter scale to measure speed or distance. The lower half of the dial is decorated with Geneva wave finishing which calls to mind the iconic vertical grills of Indy racing vehicles. The checkered pattern on the ends of the pushers is reminiscent of the checkered flag that indicated Dixon’s 29 career Indy wins. The red and white accents that decorate this timepiece pay homage to the Target car that Scott Dixon has driven to victory so many times.

Rhodium-plated luminescent hands and highly reflective Arabic numerals allow for easy visibility, even in the dark. The timepiece features a chronograph function with three subdials. It is covered by scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and has a transparent, tinted sapphire crystal caseback. The crystal caseback is engraved with the Indy 500 Winner’s wreath and the inscription “2008” to commemorate the year that Scott Dixon was the winner of this world-famous race. We thought we had been sufficiently impressed with Hublot’s Classic Fusion Aero Chronograph and its various forms. Little did we know, the best was yet to come.
Recently, the Nashville salon was privileged enough to receive an all Rose Gold version of the statement-making timepiece by Hublot. It’s only been in the store for a week, but it’s already making a big impression. The recent upswing in rose gold men’s timepieces has been widely followed, and we’re not the only ones enamored with this new trend.
At 45mm, the Classic Fusion Aero Chronograph is a bold watch, to say the least. A watch that size, in an all gold case no less, means it won’t be worn by the faint of heart. Memoris: The Chronograph-Watch by Louis Moinet

We’ve mentioned in the past that innovative watch brand Louis Moinet proudly claims their namesake created the world’s first chronograph (the “compteur de tierces”) in 1816. Fast forward 200 years, and the brand is looking to once again revolutionize the watch industry.
“It’s probably the most important launch we’ve ever done” Jean-Marie Schaller, CEO of Louis Moinet, says of their latest creation- Memoris. Historically, watchmakers have referred to a chronograph function as a complication- a cool addition to your standard time-telling accessory, but not it’s main function.

The winner of King Jeweler’s Luxury Sport Watch of the Year as released at the SIHH 2010 show hosted in Geneva during late January, IWC triumphs with release of the Yacht Club collection back in the iconic Portuguese case. The 45.4mm Yacht Club Chronograph is the first sporty IWC model in the Portuguese family and houses IWC’s manufacture caliber 89360. Its chronograph permits the recording of aggregate times of up to twelve hours on the common counter for the minutes and hours and can be reset to zero via the flyback function at any time while running, so that it is instantly ready to start measuring a new time.
Built for sea duty, a screw-in crown and crown protection help protect against the elements, and the case offers 6 bar water resistance. Consistent with the sporty theme, this watch has luminescent indices and hands – a first in the Portuguese family.
The Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph is available in three variants: 1) steel with a silver-plated dial, rhodium-plated luminescent hands and appliqués; 2) steel with a black dial, silver-plated flange and rhodium-plated hands and appliqués, also luminescent; 3) 18 carat red gold with a slate-colored dial with a sun pattern ground finish, subtly contrasted by the black small seconds display circle and the black ring for the aggregate minutes of the chronograph. 3 Basic Tips to Maintain Your Chronograph from a watch expert

The chronograph watch is the quintessential sports watch and one of the most popular complications amongst mechanical automatic timepieces in the world. Invented by a Frenchman named Rieussec in 1821, a chronograph is a chronometric (time-measuring) device which contains a mechanism that allows to stop at least one hand to facilitate reading of the elapsed time. The Greek words “chronos” and “graph” stand for “time” and “writing”. Around 1910, the chronograph was introduced as a wrist watch. It quickly became a very sought after type of watch, only to gain in popularity through the years. When the Swatch watch company started the production of affordable and fashionable chronograph watches in early 1990, they sold like wild fire, as did the later versions. Today, with almost every respectable watch company claiming a chronograph within its collection, one can ensure optimal health for their chronograph watch with three simple steps:

1) BEWARE OF THE DATE: Most watch salesman will never tell you about one of the most essential DO NOTS when it comes to chronograph watches, but it is best to NEVER change the date function on a chronograph watch when the time is between the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions. Therefore, it is best to change the date when both the hour and minute hands are in the lower half of the watch between the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions (for example, think 6:30). By following this simple step you will eliminate stripping gears within the chronograph movement and provide better precision over time.
2) WIND YOUR WATCH: We all take for granted the fact that most automatic watches are still running when we pick them up to wear, but realize that when you’re not wearing an automatic chronograph watch it loses power and precision over time. As the coil in the mainspring slowly unwinds releasing energy through the power train of the watch movement, it generates power throughout the movement that eventually fades with the uncoiling of the mainspring. As horology improves the power reserve and energy efficiency of movements, it is best to appreciate the fine Swiss movement and wind your watch to ensure full power energy levels… but never over wind your watch!!!
3) WEAR & CARE: The most basic maintance of a chronograph watch, and all watches for that matter, is to wear and care for your timepiece. Think of your chronograph movement as a sports car engine that you need to keep well lubricated and full of energy. It’s best to frequently run these high performance engines, but in the case of timepieces that don’t get much use, consider investing in a good and affordable watch winder such as an Orbita.net” target=”_blank”>Orbita that will wind your watch for you when not being worn and keep all of the oils and lubricants as fresher, this requiring less maintance in the long run.
